“You must have made all the little teenage girls fall in love.”
He got a dark look on his face. “Wasn’t much time for that.”
“Why, were you in a biker gang even way back then?”
“No.”
I could tell I was treading in dangerous territory, but I wanted to know what was going on in his head. “Then what?”
“Between working a job after school to help my mom, and taking care of her after my old man would beat on her, there wasn’t much time for girls.”
Damn.
Guess I was hearing about the demons after all.
“Sorry,” I mumbled.
“It’s okay. It’s all in the past.”
“What happened to them?”
“Don’t know about my dad. Probably died drunk and alone in a gutter somewhere. When I was sixteen and finally got big enough, I threatened to kill him unless he walked away and left my mother alone for good.”
I looked at him in shock. “Did he?”
“No, he broke my arm and three ribs. The first time, anyway.”
“There was a second time?”
“Oh yeah. He was scared the county’d put him in jail for kicking my ass, so he took off. Came back a year later, when I was seventeen. Then I broke both his arms and five of his ribs. Never saw him again.”
“What about your mom?”
“She remarried after I left home at eighteen. Nice guy. Move to Reno, had a good ten years or so with him.”
“What happened?”
“Car accident. Couple of years ago.”
“I’m sorry, Jack,” I said softly.
“She was happy until the end. That’s all you can ask for, the way I see it. Happy and free till the end.”
“You weren’t happy with Sloane?”
“The first couple of years were good, but eventually I got miserable. What we had was never enough for her. It was always about more, more, more. If it wasn’t for the Midnight Riders, I would have been happy to just ride the back roads of America for the next thirty years, staying in motels and campgrounds and having sex out under the stars.”
Wow.
Sounded good to me.
“Are you happy now?” I asked.
He stopped me, turned my body towards him, and held my face in one hand.
“More than I’ve ever been in my life,” he said, and kissed me.
