Seriously? You would think she waswayolder than me.

Kendal shook his head and left. He was just as bad as her and I was kinda grateful he couldn’t talk. Oh, he could still say so much with sign language; he was just tired.

Of me.

“Bye.” Ari waved at Kendal and me as she got down and ran into her school. Her teacher glared at me and I did the most mature thing I could think of –I flipped her off.

Kendal chuckled and shook his head.

“What, I hate her.”

I drove to Hot and Warm Coffee only to be met with more headaches. Lily the coffee girl –or whatever they were called– smiled widely at Kendal and me as we entered the coffee shop.

“Hi Alexis, how are you today?” She asked, but after sensing my lack of interest in speaking to her, she answered herself. “Well you are in another black assassin outfit and not smiling so I assume all is well. It would be a problem if you were smiling.”

I stared at her unbothered and she laughed uneasily under my stare. She was scared of me and while that should turn me on, she was nowhere near my type. “Kendal wants to stay here today, is that okay?”

“Kendal… um of course Ken can stay, he’s a sweet boy and I would love to talk...” From the corner of my eyes, I saw Kendal grimace, but Lily continued to rant.

“You talk too much, Lily.” I dipped my hand into my purse and pointed some dollar notes at her. “Have this for him.”

She looked at the money, then at Kendal. “Oh no no it’s okay, I…”

I glared hard at her, I was completely done with her nonsense. She gulped and took the money from me. I ruffled Kendal’s hair and turned to leave. I heard Lily talk to him behind me.

“She’s so scary. She’s just a girl like me — probably the same age, but she intimidates me so much. Does she scare you at home?” Maybe Kendal said no, she continued. “Well if she does, tell me so I can call child services. I wonder what she does.” How kind of her.Maybe I should give her a preview of what I do.

I got into my car and heard the owner of Hot And Warm coffee scream. “LILY, MAYBE I SHOULD DO YOU A FAVOR BY FIRING YOU SO YOU CAN WORK AT A RADIO STATION, INSTEAD OF WASTING YOUR TALENT HERE.”

“I’M SORRY, SIR.”

Oh, Black Jesus. My damn ears.

Her eyes lit up as I walked through the door. Her smile widened, eyes glistening with tears, and as sweet as that sounded, it grossed me out.

She shook her head as she saw the disgust on my face, and I guessed that she was starting to get used to it. About damn time.

It’d been six months since I last saw her. Well, if I didn’t count the last time - which was a huge mistake - it would have been a year and six months. I never wanted to make that kind of mistake again, I only wanted to see her on my terms.

She moved to me with arms opened, initiating a hug. I hadn’t even stepped away before she remembered that I hated hugs or any physical contact I didn’t sign up for. She whispered a ‘sorry’ and kissed the air, still smiling from ear to ear, evidence that she was honestly happy to see me come home myself after a while.

“Hi, Jordan.”

ALEXIS

Ten years.

It had been ten years since the incident that changed my life, ten years since my mother lost her baby. Ten years since the villain the world feared replaced the old me.

Ten years since death denied me and ten years since I last had peace of mind.

Darkness holds by testing. I was tested by losing faith in humanity and I was tested by looking in the eyes of the beautiful woman called the angel of death, but she refused me.
