ALEXIS

THIRTEEN YEARS OLD

Iopened my heavy eyes to feel pain in my body. I whimpered and mommy covered her mouth, crying in what looked like relief. I glimpsed at her through my hooded eyes and I didn’t hide my shock when I saw her looking okay.

No tangled hair, no bruises on her face and even though her eyes were puffy, it was clearly because of tears and not slaps from Uncle Cedric.

I took in my location and I frowned. This was not Uncle Cedric’s house. Did daddy come to save us or did Uncle Cedric apologize and release us? Or was I dreaming about it?

I glanced over to my right and almost ran when I saw a man and three ladies all dressed in white. Angels? What was happening? I was so confused.

My mommy was still crying, but she looked so relieved to see me awake. Did I die yesterday? I remembered that Uncle Cedric made Jay cut my arm, he must be so scared.

I looked at my left arm and gasped, a full blown gasp. My cut was now a scar, but how was that possible? How was it possible that yesterday's deep long wound was almost healed.

“Hi, Alexis.” The man greeted me and my face scrunched in confusion.

Who’s Alexis?

It appeared like they were talking to me, but how could I be Alexis when I was Jordan? I looked at mommy to see her smiling down at me as tears ran down her eyes.

She would explain everything to me if I asked her. She would tell me where Jayden was, where we were and why these weird people were calling me Alexis.

“Mommy…” I called her and got shocked by how hoarse my voice was. The nurses gasped and I turned to look at them.

These people were so weird and I hated it here. I just wanted to return home and see Jayden so he could tell me how I was able to come out of the room. Did his daddy really forgive and let us go?

“Yes my baby, you’re okay now. You’re here now and you won’t go again, right?” she cooed and I frowned, but nodded anyway.

“Can you see this, Alexis?” I heard the man again and directed my attention back to see him wiggling a finger at him. Of course I could see it. Did he think I went blind? “If you can see it, I need you to follow it with your eyes.” He moved it left and right, and I traced the fingers with my eyes, causing the nurses to clap and jump happily. What was so special in following a finger?

“Your daughter is a really strong girl, Mrs George. Not everyone speaks so fast after waking up.”

Mrs George? Our last name was Vincenzo, wasn’t it?

I was so confused and they were all just smiling creepily at me instead of explaining.

“Give her daily dose of injections to her and get her fruits. She starts rehab tomorrow.” The man ordered the ladies and they all nodded and left. “I’d like to see you in my office, Mrs George,” he said to my mommy.

“I want to be with my baby, I’ll join you soon.” The doctor nodded and left. “Jordan, how are you now?” I knew my name was Jordan. Then why did the doctor call me Alexis and why didn’t she correct him?

“Mommy, where are we and where is Jayden?” She beamed sweetly at me.

“He saved us, honey. He saved us.” She announced and I smiled. Really? He finally found a way for us to leave? I liked him even more now.

“Then where is he? Tell him I want to see him.” I requested, still smiling. Mommy’s smile fell, and my eyebrows furrowed. Did I do something wrong?

“Baby, I mean he saved us, he got a way for us to escape,” she explained what I already knew.

“I know what you mean, mommy. Now where is he?”

“At his house,” she said and my whole life flashed right in front of my face.

“At his house? Mommy, you left him there? Uncle Cedric will kill him, how could you leave him there? Let’s go and save him right now please, Uncle Cedric will hurt him.” I begged, crying and trying to get up, ignoring the pain in my body.

I couldn’t leave him there with those people. They'd hurt him the way they hurt me and they might hurt him even more since he belonged to them. “Please listen to me, my baby. Jayden found a way for us to come out, I’m sure he will be fine.”
