When I finally notice the time, it's past midnight. I need to be up in less than five hours.

Reluctantly, I tell him I have to go. He walks me to the front door. There's something in the air, floating like fireflies between us.

"I've got a few big days coming up at work, so I won't be able to make it to the library."

"Is that why you haven't been in the last two days?"

I nod. "Yeah. We're swamped at the moment."

"I see. That's fine."

The sadness in his voice hits me hard. "Hey." I take hold of his chin, lifting it so that our eyes meet. "I really enjoyed tonight, and I would love to see you again."

He blinks up at me with those dual-colored eyes. "You would?"

He has no freaking idea how much. "I would. You free this Saturday?"

"I work in the morning, but I finish at midday."

"Great. I can pick you up from the library, and we can go on a hike? See if we can hunt down that elusive mountain bluebird."

"I'd like that."

"I'd like that, too."

I lean down and place a kiss…on his cheek. "Goodnight, PJ."

"Uh, goodnight, Branum."

PJ

"He. Did. What?" Trevor whisper-shouts each word.

I stop scanning books and let out a despondent sigh. "He kissed me on the cheek and left."

"And by cheek you mean…"

"The one on my face."

"Right."

We exchange a look. That wasnothow I pictured my date ending last night.

I thought everything had been going well, aside from when I almost passed out at the start. The conversation flowed easily. Branum revealed something real about himself, which gave me the strength and confidence to do the same.

My OCD has been a deal breaker with guys in the past. All of them ran for the hills as soon as they found out, but Branum didn't seem bothered by it, just like I wasn't bothered by his admission. Like I told him, I think it's great he's learning to read and going for his GED.

I tried to be discreet about it, but during the course of the evening, I slowly inched my way down the couch toward Branum. When I got close enough, he put an arm over my shoulder and held me close.

All the signs were there, pointing to an end-of-date kiss. On the mouth.

I got a cheek.

"What the hell does it mean?" I ask Trevor.

"Beats me." He thinks about it. "Are you seeing him again?"
