"Oh? What was that like? What did your father want?"

April went on to tell him everything Richard said. She left out the part about wanting to call Nigel a few times so that she could tell him all of this sooner. She just wanted to give him the space he needed.

The space to figure out if he wanted to get with his ex-girlfriend. Who she realized they hadn't spoken about yet. What did she want? Did they meet up?

Aside from the short apology, she realized she was the one who had been talking. But Nigel had the answers to the real questions between them.

"I'm sorry. Here I am droning on and on about me. What about you? What happened the past few days with... Lily?"

Nigel took a deep breath. His shoulders relaxed as if he was relieved to finally be able to tell her the truth.

"Well, she did try to see me again, this time at work. She came to Giant's for lunch one day."

That gave April a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. She crossed her arms in front of her chest, suddenly feeling like she was taking up so much space in the room.

"She came to see you at work? What did she want?" April asked, her voice laced with suspicion.

Nigel's expression turned pensive. "She told me that she's here for work. That's why she came back into town."

Though it should have brought her relief, she didn't feel relaxed at all. Far from it, in fact. Because she knew that Lily could always have other intentions. Once she didn't tell the man she was trying to get back about.

When she didn't respond, Nigel continued, "She's supposed to be here for a week. But then she told me that she might be moving back here after that."

April gulped, feeling her throat dry up as she attempted to swallow hard. "What does she do for work?"

"I'm not sure, to be honest. She didn't tell me. I asked her to leave after that."

The only good thing in the entire story was that Nigel didn't want to talk to her. Otherwise, each detail made April more nervous. Was there a chance they would get back together? She didn't want to be the fool who fell for someone that was in love with someone else the entire time.

She'd seen those movies. They didn't end up well for people like her.

"What happened between the two of you?"

The question was out there now, and Nigel paused. She looked at him, reading the emotions that played across his face. He seemed nervous, as if he had something to hide.

"We were engaged," Nigel said finally, looking away from her gaze. "But it didn't last long."

April could hardly believe her ears. Her jaw dropped in shock as she tried to find the right words to respond.

April felt like she had been slapped in the face. Engaged? She hadn't expected that at all. It was like everything in her world suddenly shifted and changed, even though nothing had actually happened yet.

Everything felt different, as if a veil of uncertainty and doubt had descended upon them, clouding their relationship with it's thickness.

For a moment, April was speechless. She didn't know what to say or how to respond to such an unexpected turn of events. She knew Nigel had dated Lily before but engaged? Something told her there was much more to the story than he was letting on, and that thought made her feel uneasy.

"Engaged? You were engaged? To Lily?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Yes. But it was so short-lived. We were in love once. She broke things off a month later."

April could feel her heart rate picking up speed as she tried to process what she had just heard. Her stomach lurched, making her nauseous.

Engaged? It was a lot to take in, and she wasn't sure how she felt about it.

There was a sharp pang of jealousy that hit her, but she tried to push it aside. She didn't want to be that kind of person. But she couldn't shake off the feeling that something wasn't right.

April couldn't help but feel a sense of betrayal wash over her. She had fallen for a man who was still hung up on his ex-fiancée. It was like she was just a placeholder until Lily came back into the picture. Her heart felt heavy with disappointment and despair.

Not only were they engaged, but she was the one to break things off. She didn't want to jump to conclusions. But it was hard not to hear all of this news at once.
