This was the same man who was trying to take her down. He was the one who made Trisha come out to her property. He was trying to take the horses away from the island.

Everything that had happened so far made her braver than ever. Her anger pushed her forward, willing her to say whatever she wanted to this man she recently found out was her true enemy. They were on opposing sides of this little war, and neither knew would exist until recently.

April thought of her returning father, who only pointed out everything wrong. She thought of Nigel, who was talking to his ex-girlfriend and not telling her a single thing about it. And she thought of this man in front of her, who wanted to take down her dreams. The man who wanted to push out the animals she loved from the only home they'd ever known.

"Yes?" he said, smiling at her.

She was sure that he had no idea what was about to hit him. "My name is April Faith. You're the man who's running for mayor?"

Her adrenaline was pumping faster than it had ever been before. All of her frustrations

Walking away from the receptionist desk and getting just a foot away from April, he replied, "Yes, I am. And it's nice to finally put a face to the name."

"So you know why I'm here. You sent someone out to my property to tell me I needed a hundred permits."

Her voice was low, so not to alert everyone around to their discussion.

"Because you do need them. Or... You will need them when you create this little ranch of yours. It's quite a few hoops to jump through if you ask me."

April rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right. You're not trying to make me do paperwork. You're trying to put a stop to-"

He stopped her with a hand up between them.

It made April even more furious that he would interrupt her like that. She was taken aback by his audacity, just as she was about to go off on him, he was stopping her.

Isaac smirked and leaned in closer. "I know exactly what I'm doing here, okay? You don't have to tell me my plans. Because I made the plans myself. And they're good plans."

She was astounded by his confidence, his direct attitude, like he was clearly gunning for her and was upset that she didn't back down. It was arrogance if she'd ever seen it.

April felt her blood boil as she stared at Isaac. This man was clearly not someone to be tangled with.

After everything she'd been through, she knew she couldn't let him intimidate her. She could feel her anger boiling inside of her, and she knew that she had to be careful with her words if she wanted to come out on top of this confrontation.

She whispered, trying to sound just as sure of herself. "They're not going to work. Because I'm just cleaning out my property. Nothing you can do to stop that."

The man scoffed in her face. "Yeah, right. Sure you are. All I'm saying is if I was you, I'd be doing things differently."

April's eyes narrowed at Isaac's words, feeling the fire of determination inside her burn even brighter. After gritting her teeth, she took a deep breath, trying to keep her cool. She wasn't going to let him intimidate her, no matter how confident he seemed to be.

"Lucky for me, you're not me. And what makes you think you know what's best for me? You don't even know me."

"Oh, I know you. I know exactly who you are and what you're trying to do. Just some advice, if I were you, I'd be stripping that land of all its ugly little buildings and subdividing it to corporate interests."

It hit her like a bullet to the stomach. It made her sick to even think about. Her family property being divided and used for money instead of her dreams of making it into a place for the community over all else.

She didn't know what to say. How was she supposed to respond to a man who didn't care? She couldn't magically convince him to care about this island and its people.

"Just know that I'll be here every step of the way. Trust me when I say that I'll make sure every voting citizen of this island knows what's going on here."

She wasn't confident about that, but she sounded like she was, and that was all she needed. April was still relatively new to town. She had no pull with the people here to say who they should or shouldn't vote for.

Whatever she said would be taken with a grain of salt.

"And trust me when I say you don't want to start a war with me, Miss Faith."

April felt a shiver run down her spine at the threat in his voice, but she refused to let him see her fear.

She opened her mouth to continue arguing, but no words came out. The frustration was beginning to get to her. Her cheeks grew hot at the realization that he was winning the argument.
