“Jill!” I exclaimed as she picked up the pace. “Jill, just wait. Please!” I begged her. “Let’s talk.” I caught up with her and grabbed her elbow. Just then, she ripped her elbow out of my hand, swung around to face me, and said, “Why!? So, you can leave me to pick up the pieces when you decide it’s all too much for you again? No, thank you.’ She quieted her voice as she realized people were staring.
“Just leave me alone. Don’t you think you’ve put me through enough?”
I had no words. She was right. My actions were, yet again, inexcusable. She turned to go back to her office. I watched her enter the empty elevator, and just as the doors were about to close, something came over me. I ran as quickly as I could to catch the doors. Barely making it, I grabbed one of the doors, and the elevator opened, revealing a crying Jill, all alone.
“Jill,” I whispered.
And in that moment, she crumbled into my arms, sobbing. As the elevator began moving, I pressed the top floor button to give us more time.
“Jill. You did so well out there. I had no idea, and I feel like such an ass.”
“You are an ass,” she murmured into my suit jacket between sobs. “How could you just leave me there at that restaurant? You humiliated me.”
“I... I don’t know what I was thinking, but I immediately regretted it. I was too ashamed to go back and needed time to think about everything,” I admitted. “I think we both need to take the time to talk about our past relationships. I don’t want my baggage to come between us anymore. I promise. I’ll do better. I just...freaked out. I want you so bad. I want to make it up to you.”
“Jeremy, I don’t know that I can handle this anymore. It’s too much of an emotional rollercoaster being with you.”
“Please, Jill. I’ll do anything.”
Just then, the elevator stopped, and we both lost our balance. Talk about timing. The lights flickered a bit and then dimmed. We were stuck. I rang the alarm button, and the operator picked up.
“What’s your emergency?” a female voice asked calmly on the other end.
“This is Jeremy Matos. I am calling because the elevator in my office building is stuck.”
“Great,” I heard Jill mumble.
“Mr. Matos, I have pinpointed your location and have the fire department on the way. I will warn you, there is a power outage in portions of the city right now, so it might be about an hour or more before they can get to you.”
“Well, it looks like we have no choice but to wait then,” I responded, clearly irritated. The operator hung up.
“I’m sure they’ll be here soon,” I lied.
She looked at me, eyes full of tears. “No more leaving me. You have to stay and talk things out, and I want the truth from now on. You can’t just run away when something scares you.”
My heart leaped at what sounded like another chance to make it right. “I will never leave you again. I promise. I will prove it to you.”
“This is the last shot, Jeremy. I mean it. I want to be with you, but only if it feels right. And right now, I’m not so sure. It’s all just... a lot. And what happened with Cole out there...I don’t ever want to have to do that again.”
I wiped a tear from her cheek and said, “I am so proud of you. You stood up to him. Now you can move on.” She bit her lip as she nodded her head. I felt her sigh a breath of relief.
I moved her hair out of her face and cupped her cheek.
“I’m an ugly crier,” she laughed.
“You’re perfect,” I whispered, kissing her lips. She returned the kiss and placed her hand on the back of my neck. The other arm reached around and pulled me closer to her. I could feel her desire for me.
Breathlessly, I pulled away and looked at her. “I’m so, so sorry.”
“Kiss me,” she demanded.
I obeyed and closed the distance between us, moving my hand down to her ass. I lingered there a while and then slowly pulled her leg up to wrap around my waist. Her tanned, silky skin was warm to the touch. I moved my hand up her skirt and slowly caressed her again, but this time, there was no fabric barrier. I followed her curves with my fingers and moved to the front of her, where I was able to feel if she wanted more. She did. I pushed her underwear to the side and pleasured her with my fingers. She arched backward as she moaned, and I was immediately aroused, knowing that I was the cause of her delight. I continued gently as I watched her bite her lip when I touched her in just the right places.
“Don’t stop,” she begged.
Without saying a word, I moved my other hand to her collarbone and slowly glided it down to the top button of her blouse, where I deftly managed to get it open. I slid my hand under her shirt and felt her lacy bra. The sight of it made my heart race faster. I could feel her nipple harden under my touch. I pushed her up against the elevator wall, and she let out a heavy breath.
I couldn’t take it anymore. I knew I didn’t have protection, but I wanted her here and now.
