That’s the first thing that pissed me off. But I’m also pissed because they’re all here. It means this is going to turn into another craptastic family meeting.

Except this time, I’ll be the one calling it. Tanner can step aside with his shit attitude and make room for mine.

Dragging Brinley along at a clipped pace, I refuse to feel bad about the complaints falling from her mouth or the way her feet trip over themselves.

I’ve still got sand in my fucking eyes, and it stings like a son of a bitch every time I blink. Not to mention the shit is in my mouth too, and there’s that annoying as hell gritty crunch whenever I grind my teeth.

Which happens to be a lot right now.

Damn near constantly.

And why?

Because Little Miss Nerd won’t give up information on her dad. Not that I know she can if she was being even the tiniest bit honest at the lake.

Oh, she’s sheltered, they said.

An easy target, they said.

Scared of the world and shit, they said.

Even she claimed it.

And guess the fuck what?

No, she isn’t.

Not even in the slightest.

She’s a nightmare disguised as a nerd.

Scared people don’t attack their abductor. Sheltered people don’t argue like their life depends on it. Easy targets are not the biggest pain in the ass I’ve ever run across in my entire life.

That’s why Brinley’s not my problem once I let her go, and knowing her propensity for running off, I’m not taking a single finger off her arm until she’s seated right in the middle of that meeting.

Let them chase her if she tries to haul ass again. I’ve done my part.

I stop in place, my hand on the doorknob.

Everyone but Jase.

If that hothead womanizer so much as lays a finger on Brinley, I’ll destroy him.

Only because I’m a nice guy.

And not because for a second there I may have cared about her.

Convincing myself of that, I march into the house with Brinley firmly in tow, haul ass through a kitchen of extremely confused people, then as I’m heading into the living room where the rest of the confused bastards are lingering, I yell loud enough for everyone to hear me.

“Family fucking meeting. Right now.”

Tanner’s head snaps my direction, his mouth opening to say what? I have no fucking clue. Because before he can get a word out, I lose what truly is my last fuck to give.

“Shut the fuck up, and sit down.”

As the last word is leaving my mouth, his trap shuts, and I direct Brinley to the couch and drop her on the center cushion. Nice and snuggly when I then ask Luca and Ivy to come sit on either side of her to keep her in place.

And that’s not because I don’t want another guy sitting beside her. Especially Jase. And again, I’m trying to convince myself.
