“Brinley, what exactly did you do to him? I’ve never seen any of these guys run away like this. It may be useful information to have at some point.”

My blood pressure rises. “Shut it, Ivy.”

She flips me off.

This family meeting is going fantastic.

Tanner, oddly, remains calm.

“Okay, everyone chill. Let’s talk about this like adults and figure out how to smooth this all over. Shane, take a seat.”

He starts to walk off then stops.

“Damon and Ezra. You stay at the door.”

I’m walking over to an empty seat when Tanner adds, “Just in case Shane gets scared and tries to run away again.”

A growl erupts from my throat when snickers are heard through the room.

Fuck them.

They have no idea what is sitting on the couch with Luca and Ivy.

A secret weapon hidden under baggy clothes and a bad attitude.

Her father should be commended on what I assume is another part of his training. Every woman should know how to defend herself. It just really sucks for me at the moment that Brinley learned those lessons.

I turn to see that Brinley is glaring at me, and I shoot a glare right back at her.

We’re a minute deep into our stare down when Tanner clears his throat.

“If you two could stop eye-fucking each other for a few—”

“Won’t happen,” we answer in unison, turning our heads long enough to glance at him before going back to glaring at each other.

“What won’t happen? The fucking or the staring?”

“Both,” we answer in unison again.

Gabriel laughs and sips from his drink. “I’m not entirely sure, Tanner, but I think things didn’t go well tonight.”

I refuse to look away from Brinley. “Bite me, Gabe.”

He laughs more.

The smell of pot smoke drifts past my nose. Looking at Sawyer, I shake my head. “Really?”

He settles back in his seat, smoke rolling over his lips. “What? I mean, this shit is entertaining and all, but it’s also stressful.”

We quiet down when Tanner’s patience finally snaps and he yells, “Everyone, stop.”

After giving each of us a warning glare, he fixes his sights on me. “What did you just say about ex-military?”

Waving a hand in Brinley’s direction, I answer, “Ask her. If…” I glare at her again, “she’ll answer.”

Ezra and Damon are both finding this way too amusing, if the stupid grins on their face are any indication.

I ignore them.
