Is it possible the governor was lying the entire time and Shane and his friends are being honest?

Why did Governor Callahan end up with that flash drive? And how?

The more I learn, the more questions I’m left with.

“Earth to Brinley,” Ames waves a hand in my face. “Should I call the cops?”

Our eyes meet before I look at Shane again.

Following my stare, a small gasp bursts over Ames’s lips.

“Is that who I think it is?” She grabs my chin to turn my face so she can look me directly in the eye. “Are those the guys who took you?”

I sigh, a decision made that I hope I don’t live to regret.

“Don’t call the cops, Ames. I’ll take care of that. This entire thing has been a big misunderstanding. They’re…”

I pause, not sure what to tell her.

“Uh, they’re new friends.”

Her jaw drops.

“So theyareyour people? I fucking knew it. Why have you been holding out on me? Let’s go talk to them. Introduce me.”

It never fails to amaze me how Ames can live through trauma then just be perfectly okay. Like nothing ever happened.

Maybe it has everything to do with the way she was raised. It makes me think the trauma she’s experienced since she’s known me is nothing in comparison to what she lived through growing up.

I know some of the details, but the more I’m around her, the more I believe she’s been through situations that most people could never handle, much less walk away from unscathed.

Tugging on my arm, Ames doesn’t wait for my answer. She simply drags me along to approach Shane and Damon.

When we reach them, Ames immediately walks up to Damon first. The twin, I realize, that she was blustering about all the way back at the party. He’s her favorite.

While she introduces herself to Damon, Shane pulls me aside.

“Are we good now?”

I hate to say it.

I still think I’m an idiot for saying it.

But it needs to be said.

“I’ll tell you what I know about everything. And I’ll trust you to be honest with me. But if I help you, I need you to help me as well.”

He grins at that, the stormy sea in his eyes calming down. Beneath these lights, they almost sparkle.

“What do you need?”

Taking a breath, I can’t believe I’m saying this.

But here we are. And it’s come this far.

Might as well play this out until the end.

“I need help finding my father.”
