His jaw drops, and the color drains from his face. “I’m sorry, but what?”

She starts to repeat it, but he cuts her off.

Casting a confused look at me, he eventually pulls himself together, manages a pained smile, and nods his head for her to run his card.

I grin like an idiot.

Kelly had a point, and I’m glad I listened to her. This is the most entertainment I’ve had around Shane yet.

Kelly hands him his card back with a sly expression, her eyes darting to me for just a second. She winks then sets her attention on him again.

Her fake French accent is back in place. “Thank you so much for shopping with us. We look forward to seeing you again.”

Snapping her fingers, she summons valets to carry the bags for us. I’m a little disappointed with that. I’d hoped Shane would have to carry them.

Still, I don’t miss the stern tension of his shoulders as we follow the men to his car. I stop just behind him after he opens the trunk.

Leaning in, I hate the way his cologne messes with my body, every female instinct in me on alert. The man smells as good as he looks. But still, I endure it, just so I can stab the knife deeper.

Whispering against his ear, my voice barely hides my amusement.

“It’s a good thing Beauty has such a large trunk. They can barely fit the bags as it is. Could you imagine trying to stuff them in my car?”

The growl that rattles his throat is barely audible. But I heard it. And keep going.

“Thank you so much for teaching me this lesson, Shane. I have no idea what I would have done without you.”

Another growl and I have to bite my tongue to keep from laughing.

“Just get in the damn car,” he snaps.

Happily doing as I’m told, I run around the side and get in my seat. He’s sitting beside me within a few minutes, the engine roaring to life when he turns the key.

I don’t even mind the way he tears out of the parking lot and down the street. After driving around with him yesterday, I’m becoming accustomed to the speed.

Tense silence hangs between us, his jaw grinding and knuckles white where they grip the wheel. I can’t keep from poking the bear.

“Thanks for the shopping trip.”

“You’ve already thanked me,” he answers. His voice sounds like he’s chewing glass.

I nudge him with my elbow. “Saw you were on the phone. Everything okay?”

Before he can answer, his phone rings again. He hits a button then tosses it back in the center console.

“You’re on speaker.”

A male voice comes through the line, but I have no idea which of his friends it is.

“Damn man, you okay? You sound like someone ran over your puppy or some shit.”

Not caring who it is, I rub salt into the festering wound. “He took me clothing shopping.”

My voice is way too chipper.

“He what? Shane? What the hell is going on? I thought you were leaving for Georgia.”

The car picks up speed as Shane merges off a ramp and onto the interstate.
