She nods, the gears still grinding in her devious head.

“Maybe because he knows what every person’s purpose is, like you said, and he knows you get the worst jobs. Sounds to me like he’s taking care of you, and you’re the most rebellious.”

Witch…

There is no way this woman just managed to make me feel the tiniest bit grateful for Tanner’s bullshit. But when looking at it that way, I can’t argue.

Tanner takes care of who he considers family. And I know for a fact that I’m a brother to him.

This is what I get for dating a nerd. They pay way too close attention.

Laughing to myself, I grab her face between my hands and kiss her nose. She scrunches it in response before I have a chance to pull her to me fully and kiss her like she deserves.

She melts in my hold, and I’ll never get enough of that feeling.

Coming up for air, I chuckle to see her a little kiss drunk, her eyes soft and lips puffy.

Then she sets that stare on me, and I see the nerd come back into her, a question lingering on the tip of her tongue that she’s struggling to ask.

“Just spit it out,” I tell her.

“What are we?”

“Ah, hell. I knew this was coming.”

Brinley rolls her eyes. “You started it in the hotel right before I got abducted …again. It’s not my fault I just remembered and decided to finish this conversation.”

This woman has the memory of an elephant. “Can you do me a favor and stop remembering everything?”

Another roll of those big blues. “What are we, Shane?”

Son of a bitch, I just recently realized this woman is mine, and now she wants an official title.

Baby steps, damn it.

“We’re humans. Homo sapiens. Technically, mammals, or animals, if you really want to get broad with it.”

Slapping my chest, she laughs. “Fine. I’ll beat you at your own game.”

Good luck.

“What am I to you?”

Ah, now that’s the question. Giving it a little thought, there’s only one right response.

“You’re the woman who’s never allowed to leave me again. It doesn’t matter what happens, what stupid thing I say or do, what ridiculous topic we argue about or what chaos I’ve created. You’re the woman who won’t let go of my hand. No matter what.”

She laughs again. “I might still need to beat your ass every so often. You’re stubborn and hardheaded.”

That’s an agreement I can live with.

Pressing my mouth against her ear, I smile when she shivers. “I fell in love with a nerdy ninja. I guess I’ll just have to take it.”

She stills in place for only a moment before pulling back to look at me long and hard.

Yeah, I know what I just said and what I admitted.

Guess it simply took the right woman for once.
