“They own a real estate firm that handles both residential and commercial properties. And they’re currently making a big deal about being a power couple in the industry. Basically playing on the illusion of a perfect relationship. What’s interesting is they are currently working on the sale of a commercial building that involves Governor Callahan.”

A pen clicks and then, “How is he involved?”

“He’s trying to purchase it. Paul is handling the transaction on the governor’s end.”

Pointing his pen at Ivy, Tanner asks, “What do you know about that?”

Ivy simply waves a hand at her face as if fanning her skin. When she doesn’t respond immediately, Tanner scowls.

“Ivy?”

Her aqua eyes peer up at him, some unspoken joke written into the curve of her mouth, her white blonde hair trailing down her back in soft waves.

“I’m sorry. My estrogen is getting to me, so all I can think about is baking cookies and having babies.”

Tanner points the pen at Gabe. “Control your woman.”

Gabe laughs. “You control her. I’ve already fixed enough property damage attempting it in the past.”

“Damn it,” Tanner mutters. “Ivy, just answer the damn question.”

She rolls her eyes. “I have no idea. I haven’t been in touch with my father. But if I have to guess, it probably has something to do with him setting up a new law firm in case he loses the next election. That or he’s creating another charitable organization and needs a building as the headquarters. He does these things when the election is coming up.”

Pondering that, Tanner taps his pen against his lips. And damn if Shane isn’t right. It’s like you can see Tanner’s brain working. A complicated set of actions and events being processed faster than Taylor’s computer.

“Why would he lose the election? The state loves him.”

Ivy shrugs and picks a bit of fluff off her black cashmere sweater. “Probably has something to do with your dads and whatever is on the server and that flash drive. Why else would he be pulling all this shit?”

Tanner shifts his attention to Ames. “What’s going on with the flash drive?”

“Oh, shit. My turn?” She glances around the table. “Sorry, I didn’t think I’d be part of this. I didn’t prepare.”

Tanner groans. “Who’s decrypting the drive, Ames?”

She smiles. “That’s easy enough. My brother, Kane Hart, and some friends of his.”

Taylor straightens in his seat, his computer no longer the most important thing in his world. “Did you say Kane Hart?”

Ames blinks. “Yeah. My older brother.”

“Holy shit, Taylor. By the look on your face, you look like you just came.”

Taylor flips Ezra off for the joke and shifts his attention back to Ames.

“Your brother is a legend. And even he hasn’t been able to decrypt the drive yet?”

He asks the question like his entire life depends on it. I don’t know Taylor well, but Shane has told me that something about him is off lately.

Ames shakes her head. “No. Last I heard he called in some girl named Hannibal? Which seriously sucks for her because what an awful name. I think her mom must have hated her or something.”

“What?”

Something about that name pushes Taylor to his feet, his palms slamming down on the table. “Did you say Hannibal?”

“Yeah. And that it’s a fucked-up name.”

By the expression on Taylor’s face, you’d think he just saw God.
