“Technology is a wonderful thing. Never believe what you see in photos. They are way too easy to alter.”

Soft laughter shakes my chest. “I already know what they have on Paul. Ames wasn’t lying about him being a weird one.”

I can feel Shane grinning against my cheek.

“Yeah. That video is bona fide and original. We didn’t have to alter a thing. I’ll be sure to thank him for it one day. Makes our lives easier.”

Ames did an amazing job on her end. The first night she saw Paul come into Myth on his own looking for a good time in those back rooms, she had all the other girls on alert, the stage set and waiting.

“The video of Hillary took some work, though, but Taylor pulled it off.”

I sigh. Shane explained the Hillary situation to me, and I can’t be angry with him for it. For one, it was before he’d committed to me. And for two, it was just another horrible task he’d been set on that he hated having to complete.

It’s my hope that now that I’m by his side, the tool he’s become won’t be as useful to his father’s or even the Inferno.

Shane is a person with deep feelings, so unless a job is absolutely necessary, I’ll demand that everyone around him think twice before asking him to do terrible things.

Another spin away from his body and Shane catches me with such elegance in his movement that it steals my breath.

“Also, Mason found and convinced a former disgruntled employee of Governor Callahan’s to pull this all together.”

Wondering about that, I ask, “How did he convince him to get involved?”

“Oh, that’s simple. Lots of money and the promise that he’ll be getting back at the governor for what was done to him at his job. Plus, complete anonymity.”

Now I’m curious.

“When does the big reveal begin?”

Around us a chorus of spoons clinking against glasses occurs, the music lowering so that our attention is drawn to the front of the room.

We stop dancing, and Shane slips his hand in mine. “It starts now.”

He flashes me a devious smile and leads me through the room, back to where the rest of the Inferno is standing.

My eyes meet with Ames where she stands next to Damon, and I arch a brow in question.

Something is definitely going on with those two, and I’m genuinely happy for her if he treats her right.

“Welcome everybody to the grand opening of Callahan’s Kids, a charitable organization that will change the lives and secure bright futures for foster children throughout the country.”

From beside me, Ivy touches my arm during her father’s speech and sticks a finger down her throat as if vomiting. She leans close enough for me to hear her.

“He’s full of shit. This won’t help a single kid. It’s just another front for them to steal money from the idiots who donate to this garbage charity. Hell, they’re probably using it to launder money too, for all I know. “

My eyes widen at that, but I return my attention to the governor.

Camera flashes explode throughout the room, their bright lights bouncing off the crystal table settings and chandeliers.

No expense was spared in the decorating.

The ballroom is stunning with a mix of soft greens and creamy off-white touches. Even the tablecloths are the same off-white to match the wall drapings and elegant balloons.

Behind Governor Callahan, a large digital television screen proudly keeps count of the donations they’ve made so far tonight. I blink my eyes in shock at the $35 million figure.

“As many of you know, this property will be the headquarters for the organization, and I want to give special thanks to Paul Rollings and Hillary Cornish, for their part in making the acquisition of the property possible.”

With a wave of his hand, Governor Callahan motions to Paul and Hillary where they stand with arms entwined in the center of the ballroom.
