As usual, Ames is wearing next to nothing, but the view isn’t enough to appease her boss.

“I’m sorry,” Ames blurts out. “My alarm didn’t ring, and I was up until early this afternoon working on school stuff—”

Holding up a hand, he cuts her off.

“Do I look like I give a fuck? I’m not your professor, Ames, and I don’t give a shit about your homework or whether you aced your last quiz. All I give a damn about is the revenue you bring to my club. It’s what pads your paycheck. Now get your ass upstairs. We’ll talk about this when your shift ends.”

Bristling at the warning in his tone, I glance at Ames, sympathy rolling across my expression.

She flashes me a weak smile before sneaking around Granger to walk into the main room of the club. I don’t miss the way his hand snakes out to rub his knuckles against her bare thigh.

If this jerk wasn’t her boss, I’d give him a black eye for thinking he can touch her however he wants.

Or a throat punch.

Yes.

A throat punch.

At least it would have the added advantage of shutting him up.

Glancing quickly at me, Granger sneers and turns to follow Ames, his expensive, dark suit helping him blend into the shadows in the club.

I stroll in behind him to look for Everly. Not seeing her, I head to the bar and order a drink.

Worry seeps through me at what could be taking her so long. I try to soothe it by reminding myself I don’t know how far away she was when she called.

While I was only a few miles from the club, Everly could have been across town.

The club isn’t packed yet, which is normal for this early hour on a Monday night. The booths in back are all open.

Once I have a soda in hand, I head back to the farthest booth, the lights from above the dance floor streaming down over my skin in swirls of color.

Taking a seat, I have the perfect view of the entire lower floor.

Only a few dancers obstruct my line of sight to the entrance doors, and they eventually dance out of the way, their low laughter rising up to be heard during a break in the music.

One song blends into another while I wait for Everly, my heart skipping a beat each time someone walks through the doors, and my stomach sinking each time it’s not her.

Nursing my drink slowly, I’m almost done with it when the doors open again.

Hope that it’s Everly blossoms in my chest only to be quickly crushed when a familiar face walks into the club.

Unfortunately, it’s not Everly’s face, and even worse than that, it’s a face I hoped never to see again.

The jackass who spilled a drink on me at the governor’s mansion strolls into the club like he owns the place.

It’s the first thing I notice about him actually. The confident swagger that claims the space around him without apology. The broad width of his shoulders that adorn a drool-worthy physique. The amused smirk on his handsome face as he scans his eyes across the bottom floor of the club. In search of what, I don’t know.

Beside him, another man walks in, one of the twins I recognize from the stairs at the party. I glance behind him to see if his brother is in attendance, but from the looks of it, they’re alone.

Shrinking back into the shadows so they won’t spot me sitting here, I can’t help my fascination with them.

I am a female, after all. It would be ridiculous to claim they don’t draw my attention. And judging by the other female heads turning as they pass, I’m not the only one watching.

Both are dressed in black shirts and jeans, the twin wearing a simple T-shirt while Jackass has a button down with the sleeves rolled up his forearms. From here, I can see tattoos trailing down his skin, but I can’t make out the designs.

Neither pay much attention to the women around them who are not so sneaky in the way they inch closer, several of them suddenly needing a drink when the two guys approach the bar.
