I know she said she’sserious.

But that’s not serious.

That’s absolutely mental.

“Are you fucking serious right now?”

The question rolls off my tongue with an embarrassing screech.

“Oh. I’m serious,” she answers with a wink, her eyes drifting back to the twin who is laughing, fuckinglaughing, as he’s led down the stairs by three cops.

“You need a shrink. Or an MRI. Like, right this second. I think you must have hit your head on something without telling me. Brain damage is real, Ames.”

A soft chuckle bubbles over her lips, but her attention is stolen by who I assume is the asshole responsible for this entire night.

I say as much, but Ames shakes her head in response.

Then it hits me.

The truth.

What I should have known all along.

No.

It can’t be.

“He didn’t start it,” Ames admits on an admiring purr.

Lifting her chin up at the stairs, she indicates a second man now being led down the stairs by cops.

“He did.”

I don’t have to look to know just who started the fight. And there is not one drop of surprise in me to realize it.

My stare locks on the jackass from the governor’s party.

The idiot who spilled his drink on me.

The admittedly gorgeous specimen of a man who acts like he owns the world around him.

Arrogant isn’t the word for him.

I’m not sure there is a word for him.

But if there is a word for him, I sure as hell don’t know it.

Not yet, at least.

All I know is that even with blood dripping from his face, his shirt torn at the collar, his arms held behind his back and two cops escorting him down behind his friend, Jackass holds his chin up high and proud, a smirk gracing his regal features.

“Hell, he’s not bad himself,” Ames murmurs, a wicked glimmer in her eyes. “I hope they get out of jail quickly. Maybe they’ll come back here again. Liven the place up. You know?”

She’s certifiable.

I make the decision, and amateur diagnosis, while following the path Jackass walks with the cops behind him.

You would think the police presence would further calm down the lingering crowd around us. That the simple possibility of arrest would cause these people to disburse and stay out of view.
