“That’s weird. I wonder if another car broke down tonight.”

Maybe that’s what Patrick meant when he said I should make sure this guy had the right car.

Priest grins and turns the wheel to pull out onto the main road.

“Might be. Or sometimes dispatch screws up and sends two trucks to the same job. Happens often, actually.”

“That must be annoying,” I remark.

Laughter shakes his shoulders. “You have no idea.”

Shane

It’s like taking candy from a baby.

I mean … seriously.

Gaining control of Brinley’s car was one of the easiest jobs I’ve ever accomplished.

Okay. So mostly Priest accomplished it, but I was the master pulling his puppet strings. I was the ringleader. I was the brilliant mind behind the plan that got her in the palm of my hand.

Feels good not to be a fuck up for once.

By the end of the day, I’ll have all the information I need to find her father. I’ll be able to deliver that information to the guys, and I’ll be able to wipe my hands of this entire problem once again.

Task over.

My life will return to its regularly scheduled programming.

Not even Tanner can find a reason to bitch at me for this one.

And to think I didn’t even have to abduct her to accomplish it.

Tanner and Gabe can learn a thing or two from me. Where it took them weeks to pin down Luca and Ivy—or years, if you really want to get technical about it—it took me less than a handful of hours to have Brinley cornered right where I need her.

Was it helpful I actually did know her from previous encounters?

No.

That made my life a touch more difficult.

But was it amusing that I’d met her before?

You bet your ass it was.

To see her with another drink spilled down her shirt was simply a reward for an aggravating and shitty day.

Of all the women to run into again, it was the chick from the governor’s mansion. I knew I’d seen her before, but placing her was next to impossible. At least until the beer was spilled down her shirt and she turned to me with an expression that catapulted me right back to that fucking engagement party.

Her expression twisted in the exact same way as that night, and the memory of it slammed into my head like an asteroid slamming down into the open waters of my fucked-up mind.

To be honest, the encounter with her at the engagement party had been the highlight of my night.

Plus, now that I know who she is, I have one more piece of information to give Tanner…

Not only is she the daughter of Jerry Thornton, but she still has something going on with the governor. Meaning her father still has something to do with the governor. And isn’t that all sorts of interesting?

She was running all around that party right beneath our noses and we had no clue why she was there.
