Page 68 of Heresy

I finally let her take the contract and smile to see she doesn’t quickly scamper out of reach.

Reading over the contract, she grimaces before lifting that gorgeous blue gaze back to mine.

I really do love the red sheen of anger that colors her cheeks. Somehow, it makes her more attractive.

It’s difficult not to wonder how she would look beneath me, her mouth open on a pleasurable moan, her eyes locked to mine with surprise over how I can make her feel.

But then she gets mouthy again and ruins the entire fantasy.

“Not only are you a hotheaded jackass, but you’re stupid as well. I signed this before I knew you stole my car. Therefore, it’s not valid.”

“Are you telling me you were under duress at the time you signed this? That you were forced?”

A slight shake of her head. “No.”

“So you knew what you were signing at the time you signed it?”

Brinley huffs out a breath. “Well, yes, but that was under false pretenses.”

I find it fortunate she only sees the mechanic standing in front of her and not the attorney lingering beneath the coveralls and grime.

“Good luck proving that. It’s your word against mine, and you could just be a pissed off customer who wants something for nothing. It happens all the time. The most the cops will do is make me release the car to you. And what will you do then? Order another tow? That’ll get expensive when I hold you to the contract, despite what Priest said, and then you’ll be paying for two tows, diagnostics from this shop, plus whatever the new shop does.”

The satisfaction lining my words cements into both our heads that I’ve won this round. Calling the cops would only be digging her hole deeper.

If Brinley were made of money like us, this wouldn’t be a problem for her. But she’s not. And the only reason I know that is because her father was just as broke as Luca’s father when their shared business went under.

Brinley is cornered, and she knows it too, if the look on her face says anything about it.

Defeat withers her shoulders.

“Fine. I’ll pay for the parts and labor. Whatever will get me out of here faster. Where do I sign for that?”

It’s about damn time.

I can’t help it. I take a long look down her body then back up again. I’ve been struggling this long for fear it would piss her off more and continue the argument. But I can’t help myself now.

She’s not the type to show off her body. The T-shirt and jeans only give a hint to what lies beneath. But I like that about her. It means that whatever exists under those clothes are meant for very few people to see.

She’s like a secret in a way, the box she’s wrapped in showing nothing of the gift inside.

By the time my eyes meet hers again, I find the gander I stole pissed her off, but fortunately, she’s run out of bullshit to spew in my direction.

“Fucking pervert,” she mutters.

Or maybe she hasn’t run out of bullshit…

Winking at her, I can’t help but admire the new shade of red over her cheeks. “You like it.”

“You wish,” she answers meekly, her arms crossing over her body as if that will keep me from enjoying the view.

I chuckle but let the insult go as I lead her to the other side of the reception area and pull out a blank contract from a red file folder.

Slapping it on the desk, I grab a pen then toss it down for her to use.

“I need all your information first. I’ll go take a look at your car, and then once I have a good assessment of what we’re dealing with, I’ll come back and fill out the estimate.”

Looking down at the paper, she reaches for the pen but stops. Her eyes lift back to mine.
