When it’s just the twins and me left, they both turn me around to look at them.

“You good?” Ezra asks, his calm energy at war with the chaos that’s filling me.

“Yeah.”

Brushing off his concern, I run my tongue across my teeth and attempt to slow my breathing. “Yeah, I’m fine. I just need to figure this out.”

Ezra’s shoulders shake with silent laughter.

“You sure? Because you looked like you were about to rip Jase’s head off his shoulders over the idea of him laying a finger on Brinley.”

“And ain’t that some shit,” Damon pipes up, barely restrained laughter lining his words. “I’ve never seen you act possessive over a chick before.”

My eyes round at the accusation.

“I’m not being possessive of her.”

Shrugging, Ezra fights a grin. “If you say so.”

No.

I refuse to accept it.

Ezra and Damon are only accusing me of this shit because they were stupid enough to fall for Emily.

“I’m not being possessive, and I’m not like you two assholes. A woman isn’t going to trap me in place like Emily did with you.”

It was a stupid stab. Especially at Damon, but I’m not taking their bullshit on this issue.

There’s no way in hell I’m being possessive of Brinley. I just don’t want Jase touching her or going anywhere near her. That doesn’t make me possessive, or protective. It just means…

Fuck.

What does it mean?

Maybe it has everything to do with her being an easy target, and I’m just worried about what he would do to her.

Convincing myself of that, I apologize for what I said to them.

Rather than getting upset with me, they both grin, the expression unsettling because of the identical way they move.

“It’s fine,” Damon says, “don’t worry about it. Everybody gets a little hotheaded when it comes to the woman they want.”

Eyeing Damon, I shoot him my best warning glare.

“I mean it. She’s a task. Nothing more. Nothing less.”

After glancing at each other, they nod in unison, both with a look of disbelief on their identical faces.

Thankfully, they let it go.

Instead of pressing the issue. Damon catches my stare and repeats what he said earlier. “If you need my help, I’m there for you. Got me?”

Shaking my head at first, I’m about to decline his offer, but then a thought comes to me.

“Actually,” I say, an idea cementing itself in my mind that would make it easy to catch Brinley again. “I think you can help, and here’s why.”

Brinley
