Surprise floats through her expression.

“Really? I would have sworn he’d keep that tidbit to himself because of how it would damage his reputation.”

Damage? Why would he be thought of poorly because his daughter was stolen?

“He’s looking for you, you know? Eventually, he’ll find us and get us away from these assholes.”

Shooting a pointed look at Shane, I make it clear who the assholes are.

Shane rolls his eyes and walks farther from the car while Luca and Ivy blink in confusion.

“Honey,” Ivy says, her voice careful but no longer fake. “I need to know what my dad told you. Because I have a feeling it was a bunch of bullshit intended to make you think we’re the bad guys in this.”

I point at Shane. “He literally just forced my friend and me off the road and then forcibly abducted me. I think that qualifies him as a bad guy.”

Luca’s voice goes back to normal when she asks, “He did what?”

They both turn to level their stares on him.

Ivy is the first to talk. “You did what exactly?”

Shane shrugs and opens his mouth to answer, but Luca cuts him off.

“I can’t believe you did that, Shane. What the fuck is wrong with you? She must be terrified.”

Without thinking about it, I nod in agreement but then stop myself because this is all just an act, and I shouldn’t be agreeing with them.

It’s a classic ruse.

The big bad man can’t get the female captive to behave, so he brings out the old, brainwashed captives to make her feel safe and cozy, therefore, making her more pliable and willing to do as she’s told.

I want to yawn because fuck that.

I’m not falling for it.

They continue staring at Shane for several seconds before Luca points at him and warns, “I’m telling Tanner about this.”

Shane’s eyes round at the warning.

“Fuck Tanner. He wanted this done. I did it.”

“You can’t just run people off the road and take them,” Ivy yells, actual anger in her voice.

She’s a good actress. I’ll give her that.

Throwing his hands in the air, Shane paces in place, frustration a cloud around him that even I can feel from this distance.

“How else was I supposed to do it? And how is this any different than what Tanner and Gabe did to you two?”

The two women still in place.

“It’s a lot different,” Luca answers, her voice anything but convincing.

See?

I knew it.

They’re the old captives.
