Shane and I both stop struggling to look at the doorway.

A man I recognize from the photos the governor showed me is leaning against the doorframe. Tall with wavy hair and bright green eyes, he smiles in a way that could melt anybody’s heart.

Unlike Shane and his dirty coveralls, this man actually looks like an attorney.

His clothing is impeccable, a pair of slate grey slacks paired with a crisp white shirt. Although he’s missing the jacket and tie, he still resembles the highbrow, big money type I would expect to see at the governor’s mansion.

Shane and I both still in place, a bead of sweat dripping down the side of Shane’s face while I’m held down to the mattress.

“I recall this exact scene with Luca and Tanner before. But they were about five seconds away from fucking when they wrestled.”

Taking a sip of the drink he has in hand, his bright green eyes meet mine.

“It’s nice to meet you, Brinley. I’m Gabe, and I was told we have a problem in here. I think Ivy and Luca were hoping I could rescue you.”

“That would be nice,” I barely squeak out with Shane’s weight heavy on my chest.

Shane looks back at me, his voice rough from exertion. “If I let you go, will you sit here long enough—without fighting—to at least listen to what we have to say?”

I narrow a stare on him. “I think we’re past the point of politely asking me that question. Don’t you?”

Struggling against him, I give up when he drops his body on mine again, his weight far too heavy for me to move.

It pisses me off that our hearts beat in tandem with each other, and even more that his cologne wafts beneath my nose, the smell intoxicating.

A memory of him inspecting my car flashes in my thoughts, and that damn fascination I felt before bubbles to the surface.

He isn’t a bad guy … I want to think.

But the shit he’s pulling now says differently.

I fight again. “Get off me!”

Shane lowers his face to mine, the proximity of our mouths so close that my breath catches in my throat.

When his eyes catch mine, I realize they’re the color of a turbulent ocean, a mix of deep blue and murky green, bits of grey interspersed like the shadow of violent waves.

His voice is a caress of a whisper against my ear, and I curse the fucking shiver it forces through me.

“Not until you agree to listen.”

We both still in place, his eyes keeping mine prisoner while our hot breath mingles with our lips so dangerously close.

Gabe laughs from where he’s standing.

“I see you two need a second alone. As long as neither of you are actively dying, I’m obviously not needed. I’ll just excuse myself while you figure your issues out.”

He continues laughing as he walks away, leaving Shane and me alone.

Blue eyes sparkling with something that resembles excitement, Shane lowers his head more.

His mouth brushes mine as he speaks.

“You’re like a spitting cat, you know that? But I like that about you.”

I refuse to look away or show an ounce of fear. Truth is, I’m terrified, but I won’t let this jackass know it.

“There’s not one single thing I like about you.”
