"Get my daughter out here now!" she hissed, and Melody recognized her voice as that of the woman who had answered Jake's phone.

Calmly, Melody said, "You must be Miranda."

"You're damn right I am," Miranda snarled at her, green eyes ablaze. "Now get me my daughter. My husband never should have left her with you."

"I'm sorry, but I am not going to do that," Melody said, shaking her head. "I don't know you, and I am certainly not handing over a kid to you while you're this angry."

"Like hell you aren't! I don't know you, and I sure as hell am not leaving my daughter with one of his floozies!" Miranda snapped, and just like that, she tried to barge her way past Melody.

Quick as a snake, Melody braced herself and barred the way through the door, jamming herself with her hands and feet in the door frame.

Growling low in her throat, she warned, "I would advise against trying to enter another wolf's home without permission."

Miranda pulled back and glared at Melody so violently that she was sure the claws were about to come flying at her.

Instead, Miranda demanded, "Bring me my daughter now or there will be hell to pay."

Melody scoffed. She had already been to hell and back with Mario's pack. Miranda didn't scare her.

"How about I give Jake a call and the two of you can settle this like adults?" Melody asked, though she had to stop herself from laughing. Nothing about Miranda suggested she had a single adult bone in her body.

"Go ahead, and while you’re at it, you can ask why he thinks it’s acceptable to leave his kid with someone he's dicking," Miranda snarled at her.

Melody's hackles rose. "That's not true!" she responded automatically, but the fact was, it wasn't entirely untrue.

She blinked her eyes closed just for a second, but it was long enough to picture their single night together. She remembered the way their bodies had melded together, how they had writhed, slick with sweat and the sweet nectar of their lovemaking.

Lovemaking? No, it was just fucking!she told herself, but she was distracted from her thoughts by Miranda trying to barge her way past her all over again.

It took all Melody's self-control not to rip the other she-wolf to shreds for trying to enter her domain. For the last year, this had been her home, and she wasn't about to let an unwelcome visitor in.

Her own claws were just beginning to elongate when she felt the slash of Miranda's against her chest.

Just as she was about to respond in kind, Miranda was yanked away from her, leaving her feeling quite deflated.

"Melody, I am so sorry about this!" Jake exclaimed as he held his flailing ex-wife at bay. He yanked her around and shoved her away, placing himself between the two she-wolves. "Miranda, calm your ass down! You had no right to come here and cause even more chaos!"

Melody remained barring the door, determined not to budge an inch.

"You should leave," Jake continued. "I'm back now. I don't have to go to work until tomorrow."

"There is no way I am leaving without my daughter!"

Jake laughed openly, and Melody had to bite back her own.

"That is rich coming from someone who drops her willy-nilly whenever she feels like it!" Jake snarled at his ex-wife, squaring up at her as if he was prepared for a physical fight. Melody wondered sadly how often he had been forced to do so in the last year. She suspected Miranda's attitude wasn't newfound.

"Give me my daughter, and I won't say another word about your little slut!" Miranda said, her voice dripping venom as she inclined her head toward Melody.

Bile rose in Melody's throat. Never in her life had she been called that by another woman. Plenty of Mario's men had, but she had never taken it to heart. This was entirely different.

"Leave, Miranda, now, before I call Dash and the others and have you removed," Jake warned. His hands tightened into fists at his sides. Though Melody knew he was protecting his daughter, she couldn't help but feel a thrill at the fact that protection also extended to her. "You don't get to talk about Melody like that."

Whimpering behind her caused Melody to finally move away from the door. She was unconcerned when she sensed Jake moving further into the house, barring the way with his bulky form.

"It’s okay, sweetie," she said gently as she met Sally at the kitchen door. The little girl had Mr. Fuzzy clamped tightly in her hands.

"I don't want Mommy and Daddy to argue anymore," she whispered, and there were tears in her eyes.
