"I came to have a little chat," Kai said slyly.

The well-dressed, slick-eyed warlock made Jake's skin crawl just looking at him. He was unnatural somehow. Though werewolves had extraordinarily long lives, this warlock had an air about him that suggested he should have been dead and buried long ago. Almost as bad as a vampire, he smelled of decay.

Jake wondered how Miranda could ever have jumped into bed with such a thing, though he guessed love was blind. Or perhaps, in this case, senseless.

"Continue to try and keep Miranda fromherdaughter and I will pay your new little she-wolf a visit," Kai threatened.

Though he had not mentioned her by name, an image of beautiful Melody burst into Jake's mind. If it had not been for the threat made against her, it might have utterly distracted him.

Never blinking, Jake's hands tightened to fists and he glowered at the man. "Those are big words from a warlock to a Silverdale."

Kai threw back his head in an over-exaggerated gesture of amusement that made Jake's blood run cold. Every inch of him was screaming to unleash unholy hell on this unnatural magic freak. How had he gotten past everyone else in the office, anyway? As if he couldn't guess. The filthy tactics of warlocks were renowned. Unlike their female counterparts, the witches, warlocks were known for being untrustworthy and sometimes utterly barbaric. Considering he had met a few witches in his time, that was saying something.

"Hiding behind a name is pathetic," Kai said, his tone venomous. "You and I both know you have no real power here. Your cousin may be alpha, but you, you are weak."

Jake lost it. The little calm he had left utterly dissolved at the word 'weak,' and he launched himself across the room, shifting in midair.

Just when his outstretched claws were inches away from the warlock's face, a lung-crushing sensation overwhelmed him. It was if invisible giant hands had grabbed him by the chest. The next thing he knew, he had been flung against the far wall, right over his desk, and picture frames clattered to the floor as he was pinned there.

The sizzling scent of magic enveloped him and bile choked him as he tried to growl with anger.

Out of the corner of his eye, Jake saw the powder pouch in the warlock's hand. He had come prepared for a fight.

Snarling angrily, Jake fought with all his might to resist the paralyzing powder that the warlock had blown at him.

"Jake! Jake! What is going on in there?"

The sound of Lance, Lewis's father's, voice only angered Jake further. Though he was relieved to know his packmates were right outside the door, the fact he had allowed it to get to such a mess in the first place infuriated him.

"Jake! Open up!" Lewis's voice sounded amongst the pounding of fists on wood.

Then, just like that, with the first one and then two and finally three large bangs, the door burst right open. The clattering of the metal lock bursting free of its screws rang in Jake's ears even as he was released into a heap on the floor.

Kai's laughter turned to cackling and he stepped away from the other wolves with hands raised. "I do believe my point has been proven."

Jake snarled, struggling to his paws. His entire body ached, his head buzzing as though there were bees in his brain.

"Get the fuck out of here!" he yelled as he shifted back to human form, his suit torn to shreds. Only the desk hid him from the view of the others as he tried to shake off his humiliation as well.

Lance and Lewis growled, and Jake imagined their intimidating the warlock out of the room.

"Lewis, follow him," Jake ordered, trying to find some semblance of power.

He was relieved when his friend did so without question.

"Make sure he leaves the building!" Jake yelled after him.

The next thing he knew, Lance was helping him to his feet. "What happened? Who was that?"

Jake shrugged him off and dropped down into his desk chair to recover. "Kai," he snarled, slamming a fist on the desk. "Miranda's new boyfriend."

The word stuck like thistles in his throat.

As he sat, trying to catch his breath, he heard Kai's voice from down the hall. "Be careful, Jake. A werewolf is nothing without his pack. Listen to my warning, or I'll find you alone, and I will take Melody and Sally and you will never see them again."

Fury raged in Jake, but as he surged to his feet again, prepared to go after the warlock, the aftereffects of the spell caused him to stumble forward, and he had to grab hold of the desk to stop from falling.

Moments later, Lewis appeared in the doorway once more. "He's gone. What was that all about?"
