Jake raised a brow at the way she bit her lip. Her eyes sparked flirtatiously.

"What?"

"One more kiss?"

Jake didn't need to be told twice. Gripping hold of her head in both hands, her wet hair sticking to his palms, he kissed her passionately.

Then, even before he had finished kissing her, he dropped his hands to her buttocks and picked her up.

"Hey!" she protested as he threw her over one shoulder, slapping her ass before he dipped to grab her plastic bag from the puddle at his feet.

She kicked feebly, telling Jake she was merely doing it for the sake of it, and he carried her right back to the truck. Placing her carefully back in her seat, he made a point of putting her belt on himself, leaning in so close that they could have kissed again.

Instead, he growled, "This stays on until we get home."

She glared back at him challengingly. Though she said nothing, the look was enough to make Jake's cock throb.

He just barely managed to stop from kissing her again, knowing if he did, he might take her right there and then.

First, they had to get out of the rain and out of their wet clothes. Likely by the time they'd gotten home she would have had a proper chance to think, and she wouldn't want him, anyway.

The last thing he wanted was to take things too fast and have her regret it. And though it pained him not to take what he needed from her, fearful he might never have it, he clambered back into his seat and started on their journey home once more.

Though they were silent again all the way home, the tension was not nearly so awkward. In fact, it was filled with such desire that it took every ounce of Jake's willpower just to concentrate on driving.

He could feel Melody watching him, sense how she wanted to rip his clothes off, and it took everything he had not to just slam the brakes on and let her.

Chapter 20 - Melody

After all that had happened over the last few weeks, especially the last several days, Melody was unsure how to feel. Though she was still slightly angry, she was more in shock over Jake's confession and hot as hell after the way he had looked at her when he put her seatbelt on. It had made her insides flutter, and heat had pooled between her thighs.

Silence was all she could manage during the rest of the drive home, hoping she could contain herself long enough to figure out where the hell they were to go from here.

Jake seemed willing to do the same, and all too soon she found herself on the porch. Having run from the rain, she never expected to find Jake standing beside her after she had awkwardly said goodbye back in the truck.

"You didn't have to see me to the door," she said, blushing. "You should really get back to Sally."

Jake shrugged and glanced at the house over the fence. "She is with Lewis."

Melody bit back the urge to insult his friend again. She had seen previously how much it upset him.

"I should probably head inside and get dry," she said instead, feeling foolish and awkward.

Jake nodded. He shoved his hands into his wet jeans’ pockets with some difficulty.

"I guess I'll say good night then," he said, scuffing the toe of his boot on the floor as though there was more he wanted to say. When he looked at her again, his blue eyes were filled with emotion. "Good night."

"Good night," Melody struggled to say past the lump in her throat.

He turned, shoulders hunched, and started to make his way down the porch steps. Melody cringed, fighting the urge to call him back, and grabbed her house key from her pocket.

She placed it in the lock, biting her lip, before she turned to call him back.

At the very same moment, Jake turned back and said, "Melody, wait, I've got to know…"

She met him at the top of the porch steps and urged him back out of the rain, just under the roof of the porch.

"What?" she asked breathlessly as she gripped his forearms to steady herself.
