Lance laughed, jogging in place in front of Jake. "When you get to my age, you'll realize that wood running is for your wolf, but you need to keep your human body in good shape, too. The ladies will thank you for it."

He winked in a way that reminded Jake of Lewis, and it was abundantly clear where he got his womanizing streak from.

The only difference was Lance had lost his first mate many years earlier, and he was middle-aged by werewolf standards; he had more than earned his right to have a little fun.

"Well, it does look like it agrees with you," Jake admitted. In truth, Lance looked more like Lewis's older brother than his father. Only the streaks of salt and pepper in his hair gave away his age.

"And being away from that psycho bitch ex-wife of yours looks as if it agrees with you," Lance stated, clapping Jake on the shoulder. Still jogging on the spot, he looked through the den window and waved when he caught Melody watching them. "You definitely traded up."

"Tell me about it," Jake agreed. There wasn't even any comparing the two women. Melody was miles ahead in all aspects. "If you'll excuse me, I have to go and break the news to my daughter that her mother has been banished."

Lance cringed at that. "Good luck with that one," he said, and hurried off up the street, only turning to add, "It'll all be worth it in the end!"

Jake could only hope he was right. He sucked in a deep breath and headed back inside, meeting Melody at the doorway to the den.

"Well?" she whispered.

"It's over," Jake told her quietly. "We won."

But even as he said the words, he didn't exactly feel like a winner. In fact, he was terrified to think of how his daughter was about to react.

He looked past Melody to her, and the woman slipped her hand into his. Squeezing gently, she whispered, "We'll do this together."

"Do what?" Sally asked, looking around from the television, and Melody discreetly removed her hand from his.

"Sally, little wolf, can you pause that a minute, please?"

"But it was just getting good!" Sally protested.

Jake furrowed his brow, scowling deeply at his daughter, and with a huff, she did as he asked.

His heart in his mouth, Jake crossed the room and dropped down onto the couch beside Sally where Melody had been sitting a few minutes before.

Sitting with Mr. Fuzzy clamped in her arms, Sally gazed up at Jake with big blue eyes that threatened to drown him if he looked too deeply.

"What is it? What is the matter?" Sally asked when Jake didn't immediately explain what it was he wanted to talk to her about.

She looked between him and Melody, who came up behind the couch to lean over the back.

"Maybe it would just be best to tell her and get it over with?" Melody suggested, and she placed a hand on Jake's shoulder to offer support.

Sally raised a brow at them both but said nothing.

"Sally, there is no easy way to say this, but after your mother's actions, the alpha has decided that she and her boyfriend are no longer welcome in Silverdale."

It took all he had in him not to close his eyes as he spoke, wishing he could cut himself off from whatever his daughter's reaction was going to be.

When she spoke, she could have knocked Jake over with a feather. "Does that mean I get to call Melody Mom now?"

Jake and Melody looked at each other, gobsmacked.

"Wha…what makes you ask that?" Melody asked when Jake was too speechless to ask it himself.

Sally's scowl was deep enough that it bordered on funny. It was quite clear she thought they were stupid not to know why she would ask such a thing.

"Did the two of you really think I wouldn't notice?" Sally demanded, folding her arms over her chest with Mr. Fuzzy trapped beneath them. "I am a werewolf too, you know. I hear things."

Melody looked mortified. Jake could only hope she didn't heareverything.
