Melody shook her head and smiled back at him. “Werewolves don’t get cold.”

“You’re shivering,” he pointed out, rubbing his hands up and down her goose-pimpled arms.

“With pleasure, not with cold,” she admitted, her cheeks growing red.

Astonished as he always was by her cuteness and beauty, Jake kissed her delicately and said, “I hope I didn’t take things a little too far.”

“The tree might think so,” Melody laughed, and when she seemed to see the concern in his gaze, she reached up to cup his face in her hands and added, “But I think it was just right.”

With that, she kissed him, and an instinctive growl erupted in his throat. He could have taken her all over again, and it took all he had in him to stop himself.

“We should get back,” he said, leaning his forehead against hers. He would have happily stayed out in the woods all night long with her if not for Sally.

“Tara can handle Sally,” Melody assured him, gripping hold of both his hands. “Besides, when does she ever wake during the night, anyway?”

Jake had to admit she was right, just as she always was when it came to Sally. In just a few short weeks, she already seemed to know more about his daughter than even he did. And he knew he had finally made the right decision.

“Maybe if you had lived in Silverdale all along I never would have…” Jake trailed off, unable to bring himself to finish the words.

Melody looked him in the eye, her gaze filled with sympathy. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him before she said, “If I had lived in Silverdale all along, you may never have married Miranda, but you also never would have had Sally, and I wouldn’t change her for the world.”

Her words made his heart swell, and both he and his wolf howled up at the moon, knowing without a doubt that they had finally found their true mate, the woman who was truly meant to be the mother of his cubs.

Melody joined him, her own howl music to Jake’s ears, and it was then that in the distance he began to hear wolves all over Silverdale adding their voices. It was as if the entire pack was welcoming them, joining their voices in one huge show of union, of family. All Jake had ever wanted.
