“Every year we have an auction with the fire department to raise money for one of our local businesses.”

“I haven’t been to one in a few years, but they are always a lot of fun,” Allie says excitedly.

“Anyway, Mrs. Winters, who’s retired from the library, suggested having your business as the recipient this year.”

“My bookstore?” I’m perplexed. How does anyone in the town even know about the store?

Beth continues. “She was at Baked Inn Love the other day, and I happened to mention it.”

I’m both touched and intrigued. “Sounds amazing,” I say. “Tell me more.”

“Here’s how it works. We auction off other business owners and the local fire department for a picnic date with the town members.”

“Like a bachelor auction?” I ask.

“Not quite. It’s essentially like a fun friendship date. I volunteered Evan.” Beth chuckles. “Can we count on Ty?” she asks Mellie.

Mellie nods. “Yes!”

“Good,” says Beth. “And what about Logan? Will he be around for it?”

“When is it?” Allie asks.

“Coming up in just a few weeks.”

“Yes, I think he will. I will make sure he will.”

“Great. I wonder if we can get Preston on board.”

I gasp unexpectedly and hope no one heard me.

“Naturally,” Allie says, then smiles at me. Okay, Allie probably heard.

“What do you think?” Beth asks excitedly. “We can raise money to help you get a fresh start. I’m still hoping you can get your money back from sleazy Nial, but if not, we can help you get back in business.”

“This is all amazing. Thank you.”

“And what about setting up an e-commerce website so you can start selling your stuff online?” Mellie asks.

“Beth did the Golden Gable website,” Allie says. “She’s a whiz.”

“Good point,” Beth says. “That will be a great way to pass the time before the babies arrive.”

Why had I not thought of selling my books online? These women are everything!

“Wow, these are all great ideas. I’m up for anything, and I’m just grateful. Thank you.” I try not to tear up as I take in these women who believe in me. These new true friends. The bookstore is finally beginning to feel real again. “I don’t know how I could ever repay you.”

“Don’t even start that,” Beth warns. “These hormones are making me bananas, and I cry over everything. Just ask Evan. I cried over a milkshake last night.”

“You wanted a milkshake at two in the morning,” he calls from the doorway as he enters the room. “I said I would get you a milkshake, but it might be a while before the restaurants open, and then you cried even more.”

“See? Hormones.” Beth holds up her hands. “Hi, honey. What’s up?”

“Just seeing if you need anything and what you had for snacks.” He heads to investigate the treat board Allie put together.

“Don’t eat all our snacks, Ev,” Allie calls in a teasing sisterly tone.

“Be quiet. I’m stress eating. I’m about to be a dad.”
