“You know, Preston has his insecurities, too,” Beth says. “He had a bad breakup with his ex. So instead of finding love, he hides behind fixing things for other people.”

“Wow, I never thought of it that way before, but that is actually strangely accurate,” Allie agrees.

My phone buzzes with texts, and I glance down at it. The devil emoji and Preston’s name pop up, along with a list of texts from him in rapid succession:

Been reading your book.

So, they just kissed.

I hate you by the way.

Now I can’t put this thing down.

Why did I let you talk me into this?

I can’t stop. Why? What did you do to me?

I decide to play back for a minute and type: Still don’t believe in romance?

To which he responds again in rapid succession:

Um, this sex scene is insanely hot.

Yeah, I hate how much I like reading this.

OMG

What?!

I hate you. I’m not texting you anymore.

I can’t get like this over a book. I’m a professional, damn it!

This fucking dude.

NO.

I’m so angry!

25 pages left.

Fuck. Bring me the next book tomorrow.

I’m laughing so hard at his texts that Mellie leans over to read them, too. She starts laughing so hard, she cries. I explain to Beth and Allie what is happening with Preston.

“That is priceless,” Beth says. “I can’t believe you got him to read even one, and now he wants the next in the series?” She breaks into hysterics.

“Maybe she’ll laugh so hard she’ll go into labor,” Mellie says.

“I’ll do whatever it takes,” Beth says, catching her breath. “I’m so ready. I feel like I’ve been pregnant for two years.”

“I just can’t wait to snuggle those babies,” Allie says. “They need Aunt Allie to spoil them.”

“Yes, they do,” Beth says. “I can’t wait to see Evan be a dad. He was made for this.”

“Yes, he was. Don’t make me cry,” Allie says.

“Speaking of snuggling babies, I just left the garden shed, and Evan is there teaching Pancake a trick with Froot Loops. He loves your raccoon so much,” Mellie says.
