She blinks in surprise. “Preston, did you just pay Pancake a compliment? Did you hear that, buddy?” she coos at Pancake. “He loves you!”

“I wouldn’t go that far,” I say dryly.

Just then, the office door opens, and Axel comes in with two other guys. They’re all wearing leather cuts with patches bearing the Eastern Bones logo.

Paige’s eyes widen, and she stumbles over her words. “Good morning. How can I help you?” She shoots me a look of concern, like she’s not sure this is safe or what. Little does she know that Axel may be in a motorcycle club, but he’s like a brother to me. He didn’t make it to the auction like Toad. Otherwise, she would already know he’s a good guy.

“Come on back,” I motion for them to follow me.

I shut the door, and we all sit down. “What’s up?”

“We took care of Nial Poolmoore. He won’t be a problem anymore,” Axel says bluntly.

I nod, then introduce myself to the others. “Preston Steele.”

I learn their names are Bear and Aero, and once the introductions and handshakes are out of the way, Axel states their business. “We need your help with some club stuff. Confidential.”

“Of course. You know everything’s confidential with me. But it must be above board.”

The men exchange glances and Axel nods. “We want you to be our club lawyer.”

“Okay.” I nod. This is a major compliment because the club doesn’t trust outsiders, but I trust Axel, and I know he trusts me. Not sure what helping the club out will entail, but I will do it.

“What happened to Nial Poolmoore?”

Axel levels me with a look. “You don’t want to know.”

“Okay, then.” I shrug. “What do you need?”

“We’ll be in touch. Just wanted to set up an agreement.”

I walk them out, and after they leave, Paige whips her body around to face me. “They are likesoscarySons of Anarchyhot.”

I snort. “That’s just Axel. He’s the local tattoo artist.”

“Really?” She looks shocked, then adds. “I want a tattoo.”

“Really?” It’s my turn to look shocked.

“Yeah, I always wanted something for my mom on my forearm.”

“We can get you a tattoo, Paige.”

Her eyes shine, and she nods. “With Jax Teller? Because he looks just like Jax Teller.”

I snort and roll my eyes. “Not that type of club, Paige. They’re a clean club that does a lot for the community. They’re good people.”

“Bummer. I wanted them to be bad guy hotties.”

“Sorry to disappoint.” I lean in to kiss her before I head to court.

I knock softly on the door of the loft of the garden shed, and Paige answers in a white dress I haven’t seen her wear before. Her tanned, freckled skin looks almost edible, and her legs in that dress already make me want to run my hands up them. She smells like almonds and coconut. She leans up to kiss me. “Thank you.” She smiles. I tilt my head, waiting for the sarcastic remark, our normal banter, but it never comes.

It’s food truck night in Freedom Valley. I hope Paige likes it. I want to do something low key with her, and I want her to know the real me.
