“We want to get tattoos!” Paige calls enthusiastically, looking at all the designs.
Axel’s eyebrows raise, and he looks at me. “Matching tattoos?” he teases.
“Nah, she has her own idea, and I have mine.”
“You want to go first?” I ask Paige.
“Sure,” she says.
“Do you know what you want?”
“Yes,” she breathes. “I’ve had this saved on my phone for a long time. The timing just wasn’t right... until now.”
“Can I see?”
“No, it’ll be a surprise.”
I shrug. “Okay.” I watch Axel get everything ready and listen to their small talk.
I hear him laugh when she says, “I always wanted to get a tattoo and meet a biker. Two bucket list items in one day.”
This woman.
She gets Axel talking about his bike and his club and even asks if she can take a picture on his bike with his cut.
I laugh. “Babe, only old ladies get to sit on their bikes, and I doubt anyone gets to try on his cut.”
“What’s an old lady?”
“It means the biker’s woman,” Axel says over the whir of the tattoo gun.
“Do you have an old lady?” she asks.
“Nope,” Axel says, wiping her skin and switching hands.
“Why not? You look like Jax Teller.”
“Who is Jax Teller?” Axel deadpans.
“Are you serious right now? Like Jax Teller fromSons of Anarchy?”
“I know who Jax Teller is, Paige. I’m just messing with you.” He laughs again. It’s nice to hear. I haven’t heard him laugh in a while.
They finish up, and the way Axel talks to her is not surprising. Paige can get anyone to talk, and everyone she meets seems to end up being a friend.
When he’s done, Axel nods at me, and I know that he approves of Paige.
She comes over to show me her new ink. It saysLove, Momin her mother’s handwriting.
She looks happy. “What are you getting?”
“It’s a surprise,” I call as I head back to where Axel is getting his station ready.
“I like her, man,” Axel says.
“Good thing I have your approval, Jax Teller.”
Axel pauses, his tattoo gun raised over me. “You know I could tattoo anything on you right now, right?”
