“Then we turn the page and start a new chapter. We keep going.”

“I didn’t know it could be like this,” she tells me. “But somehow, it’s perfect. You’re perfect for me. And I love you so much.”

And this is where I’m realizing what true love really is. You don’t just find your person. You build it with your person. The right person never just comes along at the perfect time. That isn’t how life really works.

“We’re going to build this together, Paige.”

The Ledge

The next fewdays are filled with making arrangements for Harry, and they’re some of the saddest days of my life. I’m so grateful for Preston’s love and support.

We make a run to the assisted living facility to pick up the last of Harry’s things. I’ve been dreading picking them up, but it’s time. We are still in the Jeep, and I’m trying to work myself up to head in and not find him there.

He reaches over and slides his hand in mine. “It’ll be okay,” he says. “We’ll do it together.”

I realize as I’m walking that Preston is no longer beside me and turn to find him confronting Sheila.

“I’m not sure why you have such a problem with Paige, and everyone else here for that matter, but the bullying stops now. Do you understand me? If it doesn’t, I will figure out how to get you fired. I won’t stop until I do. Even if I must go to the city and bury this place in fines and legal constraints. Whatever I need to do, I’ll do it. You better learn to treat people better. Do you understand?” he bites out.

Sheila nods, still looking terrified as she scrambles behind the desk and to the back room. Preston turns and looks at me and holds out his hand. “Let’s go,” he says, pulling me along.

Damn.I sigh in relief.

We knock softly and enter Evelyn’s room, and her eyes light up when she sees us. I’ll admit, it’s hard to be here without Harry, but I feel like I gained Evelyn, and that’s making it a little easier.

After we visit with Evelyn for a while, she looks at Preston. “Did you tell her?”

“Tell me what?” I ask, looking at both of them.

Preston shakes his head and says, “No. I wanted you to tell her.”

Evelyn gives him a mischievous look. “Why don’t you show her?”

“Oh boy. I can’t wait to find out what you two are scheming.” I grin.

We say goodbye and load Harry’s things into the back of the Jeep and get ready to head back to Preston’s house.

“I want to show you something.”

“Okay,” I say, wondering what he’s up to.

He starts the Jeep, and the audiobook from his phone starts playing. He scrambles to turn it off, but not before I recognize what it is. It’s the third in the series of hockey romances. The first of which is the one I gave him not long after we met.

He looks over at me sheepishly and grins, biting his lip in embarrassment.

“How’s your audiobook?” I tease.

He wags a finger at me. “I blame you. You got me hooked on them. They’re addicting.”

“I’m not disagreeing.” I laugh as I slide on my sunglasses.

We drive down Main Street and head into town rather than toward Preston’s house. “I hope we’re going for coffee. I could use one,” I add.

“You could always use a coffee,” he says.

“True.”
