“Why don’t we order your food and I’ll tell you while we wait?”

Right. Let’s get this show on the road is what she’s trying to say. Christ, Gray. Take a hint.

They walked back into the cantina and returned to the bar.

“So, what did you order?” she asked.

Oh, for fuck’s sake.He didn’t even know. “Uh, chicken. And some beef, I think?”

“You think?” She arched a dark brow then tilted her head. “Is that why you were flapping your arms?” Pressing her lips together, she stifled a laugh.

Gray scowled, ignoring the slight twitch of his lips. “I don’t speak Spanish.”

“Can I order for you? I promise, it will be good.”

“Please. For all I know, I might’ve accidentally ordered dog meat.”

When the bartender walked over, Gray watched as the woman launched into flawless Spanish, presumably explaining the fate of his food then re-ordering.

“Okay, it should be ready in twenty minutes or so. Want to sit over there and wait?”

Gray thought for sure she would leave after ordering, but she didn’t, and he followed her over to a small wooden table. They sat down beside each other. “Three questions,” Gray said, studying her closely.

“What?” She tilted her head, lips curving slightly.

“What’s your name?”

“Aubrey St. Clair. Can I ask you a question, too?” He inclined his head. “What’s your name?”

“Grayson Ellis. But most people just call me Gray.”

“It fits you,” she said.

Yeah, he supposed it did. Especially with the silver already coming in at his temples. “Must be my gloomy personality,” he mumbled, and she smiled, lighting up the entire room. His chest tightened. God, she was a spark in the darkness that had consumed his life for the past year.

And even though he knew she was far too good for him and their time together would be fleeting, he couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to have Aubrey St. Clair in his life for longer than a few precious minutes.

Chapter Five

“Why do you think you’re gloomy?” Aubrey asked, leaning forward, unable to look away from Gray’s amazing amber eyes. They were mesmerizing, pulling her into their golden depths and holding her captive. She’d never seen eyes like his before.

Gray grunted in response. “Just am.”

“I don’t think you’re grumpy.”

“Gloomy,” he corrected.

She laughed. “What’s the difference?”

For the first time since she’d seen him, he cracked a ghost of a smile. “I guess not much.”

They stared at each other a moment too long and then she cleared her throat. “So, ah, you said three questions,” she reminded him.

“Right. My second question is what did you order for me to eat?”

Aubrey leaned back in her chair. “I picked some popular local dishes I thought you might like. That was quite a lot of food, too. I mean, I know you’re a big guy.” The moment the words left her mouth, she caught the innuendo too late. His lips twitched and she inwardly cringed with embarrassment, trying to play it off. “But are you feeding a small army?”

The hint of a smirk disappeared and he seemed to tense slightly. “Something like that,” he answered vaguely.
