There was no missing the newfound respect that glinted in her indigo eyes.

“That was my job, yes.”

“And what’s your job now?”

“Nice try.” His mouth edged up slightly. She was a smart, little thing. Emphasis on the word little. Hell, she couldn’t be much more than five-two or three.

“Can’t blame a girl for trying.” Her eyes narrowed slightly and he could see the gears in her head spinning. “Did your team kill El Escorpión’s son?”

Fuck. His eyes widened at her question which was enough to give him away.Smart?No. Miss Aubrey Sparkle was a damn genius.

“I already told you—the less you know, the better.” Gray stood up. “I should go.”

“You’re leaving?” Aubrey popped up, too.

As he passed by, he swept his Glock up off the bed and returned it to the holster at his back. Gray stalked over to the door and Aubrey hurried after him.

“Wait!” she practically squeaked.

Gray turned around and she ran right into him. He caught her elbow and their gazes locked. She was so close, smelled so sweet, and a flash of heat shot between them as he finally identified her floral fragrance—gardenias. His mother used to love gardenias and always had several pots of the little, white flowers.

The spark that erupted was hot and fast, but there would be no time to explore the undeniable connection.Just as well,Gray thought. He had nothing to offer her.

“I have to go. My team is waiting for me.”

“You can stay a little longer. Until the coast is clear.”

Gray squeezed her elbow then let go, forcing himself to turn around. Eyes on the door, he said, “Thank you, Aubrey. Have a safe flight back to Indiana.”

Then he opened the door and stepped into the hall.

With a strangely sinking heart, Aubrey watched Gray walk away. It felt wrong. Horribly wrong. On every single level. She caught the door before it fully closed and peered out, expecting to see him already halfway down the hallway and leaving her life.

But Gray was standing there, only a few steps away, head cocked, listening intently. The sound of rapidly approaching boots filled the nearby stairwell and Gray whirled around.

“Get in!” Aubrey hissed, motioning for him to come back inside the room. Without a word, Gray turned, slipped back in her room and watched the hallway for a moment.

Aubrey heard a commotion and men’s voices, and then Gray very quietly closed the door, re-locking it.

“Fuck,” he ground out. “They’re starting to check rooms.”

Aubrey’s mouth dropped open and panic thrummed through her veins. “What do we do?”

“Maybe they’ll go away if we don’t answer. We have no idea how detailed their search is going to be.”

He pressed an ear to the wooden door, listening. The sound of arguing filled the air followed by the ominous POP of a gunshot. Then another quickly followed.

“Oh, my God,” Aubrey whispered, covering her mouth with her hands. This had always been her worst nightmare. Getting caught in the crossfire of the cartels and being trapped with no way out.

Gray moved fast, grabbing the chair at the small table and returning to wedge it under the door handle.

Despite the additional security, it didn’t give Aubrey as much comfort as she would’ve liked. “Now what?” she asked.

“Now we get the hell out of here before they break the door down,” Gray growled.
