“I’m coming up.”

Yeah, he could definitely use some backup right about now and Inda was as badass as they came. Her assistance would be invaluable in saving his ass.

Whizzing past the next floor’s landing, Gray practically flew, ignoring the blood streaming down his arm, soaking his t-shirt and leaving a trail of crimson drops behind him.

Which, of course, wasn’t ideal. But he didn’t have time to stop and clean up the mess. It was imperative he stay far enough ahead of the Toxic Twins so they couldn’t shoot him in the back of his head. Even though their encounter had been swift, Gray knew one thing for certain—Julien and Camille Mercier possessed deadly fucking skills. Lethal to the extreme. No wonder The Agency had hired them to take out Ex Nihilo.

Yeah, it was a damn good thing the team had faked their deaths. The last thing they wanted was to keep looking over their shoulders, because he had a feeling once the Toxic Twins were hired, they didn’t stop until they accomplished their hit.

Lester Tillman had been an easy target, sure. But Gray had no doubt about the deadly duo’s persistence. The sound of their feet pounding down the steps above him was evidence enough. Well, they better get ready to meet Bruja.

“I’m on the tenth floor,” Inda reported. “Hurry!”

Hurry, right.Ignoring the aches, pains and stinging sensation in his left arm, Gray pushed himself to move faster. He leaped over another railing and dropped down another level. It didn’t take him long to reach the tenth floor where Inda waited with the door open.

Gray launched himself through the door and spun, lifting his Glock. Side by side, they pointed their weapons into the stairwell, using the steel door for cover.

“You’re bleeding,” Inda murmured.

“Yeah, knives will do that.”

“Is it deep?”

“I don’t fucking know. Haven’t exactly had time to examine it.”

“You and Aubrey look good together.”

“What?”

“FYI, Hunter got her home address. In case you’re interested.”

He didn’t comment, but he did tuck that piece of intel in the back of his mind.

“Where are the Merciers?” Pharaoh snapped in their comms, interrupting their conversation.

“Almost within target,” Inda replied cheerfully.

“Take them out,” Pharaoh ordered.

“No shit, boss,” Inda said in a dry voice.

A moment later, Julien and his twin sister Camille came careening around the corner and both Gray and Inda fired off multiple shots each. The moment they realized their precarious position, the pair immediately backtracked, hightailing it right back up the stairs. Gray stepped forward, on the verge of chasing after them, when Inda grabbed his arm and he hissed.

“Demon has a knife wound. We’re heading down,” Inda reported.

“We should go after them,” Gray insisted.

“Save it for another day. Let’s go get your arm checked out.”

“Get down here,” Pharaoh ordered.

Inda shrugged and Gray scowled. Even though he wanted to take the twins down, he was starting to feel a little woozy. A quick glance down and he saw why. Blood poured from his arm and, by the time they reached the ground floor and raced out the back door, he was glad they hadn’t pursued the Merciers. Especially since Gray’s legs gave out without warning and he dropped to his knees before they reached the Suburban.

???

Aubrey sank back down in the leather seat and lightly touched her lips where Gray had just planted a very memorable kiss.Holy hell.Despite the kiss being rushed and over before it truly started, their chemistry had ignited a deep desire in her.

Squeezing her eyes shut, a longing like she’d never experienced before swept over her. Aubrey didn’t want to leave. She had nothing to go home to and, for the first time in a very long time, she finally felt a connection to others—to Gray, Harper, the team. How could she leave when she was scared and worried for them? There’s no way she’d be able to forget that kiss or the team, and she’d spend the rest of her life wondering if they’d made it safely through the mission.
