“I don’t want to lurk in the shadows with you, but if I can prove Mariah was lying, then you have to be willing to risk your brother not wanting to believe me still. He may never accept that he was wrong.”

She nodded and kissed his lips with a gentle light touch that he felt to his core.

“If you can clear your name, I can accept my brother never speaking to me again. Because if he’s going to be stubborn out of spite, then I don’t owe him my loyalty.”

“And in the meantime?”

“In the meantime, we can spend time together, but we need to be careful.”

“Well, my family already knows I’m into you, but I won’t tell anyone else. For now.”

She kissed him again with a laugh.

“I know one place where we can spend time together and no one will find us.” He said.

“Oh?”

“My place is more secure than Fort Knox. No one can get into my building without a special access code, and even then I have to authorize their admittance to my floor.”

“You own an entire floor in your building?”

“Yep, I’m not just a pretty face with exceptional shooting skills. I have a brain too.”

“I do recall you were the computer whiz growing up.” Her head tilted. “Did I hear you harnessed that into some techy coin investments?”

“Something like that. It’s very technical.”

“Are you making fun of me?”

“Only if you find it extremely sexy.” He captured her mouth in a searing kiss. Could he kidnap her now, or did they have to wait for movie night to end? Before he could decide, his phone started going off.

“Damn it,” he grumbled. It was the office. “I have to take this.”

Her chest was heaving to catch her breath from their kisses, but she nodded.

“Okay, I better go make sure of something too.” She moved out of his arms, but he gripped her wrist as he stood and pulled her back for one more kiss.

“I’m not letting this go. I can’t wait three weeks to explore this with you.”

She nodded as his phone began to ring again.

He watched as Hannah walked away, back toward the crowd, and cursed his luck. Why did the girl of his dreams decide to give him the time of day the same week he was assigned the biggest case of his career? He didn’t like the idea of lurking around to be with Hannah, but he could understand some of her loyalty to her brother.

Even though Parker was wrong and had been a terrible friend, he could understand Hannah wanting to preserve her relationship with him. But he suspected Parker would never accept that he was wrong, and then Hannah would be forced to choose. The pit in his stomach told him she wouldn’t choose Conner over her family.

But he had a few weeks to try and convince her he was worth it.

Chapter Eleven

“Tomorrow night, you’remine. I’ll pick you up at eight.”

Staring at her phone before bed was never a good idea, but she couldn’t stop thinking about Conner. His text sent her pulse pounding and her imagination wild.

If he’d been sexy before she knew she could have him, he was now impossible to resist with his outspoken desire to be with her. It was like an invisible string pulling her toward him.

The movie night was a great success, and the calendars sold out so fast she had to have more printed. At this rate, they had enough proceeds to pay for a few planned vendors for the gala and a DJ. They still had a few more fundraisers, and she was considering adding an auction but would need some serious donations.

Most cops, firemen, and paramedics were from working class backgrounds and couldn’t afford to bid on flashy auction items, but she’d sent invites to several local D.C. elites and they had RSVP’d. The gala was growing by the day. A few big companies had donated services, and local sports teams offered up signed swag. If she could create enough buzz, more people would attend and they could raise enough for a permanent community center.
