“Almost. At twenty, my senior year, I decided that being on the pill, using a condom, while tracking my most fertile time of the month, I could risk it.”

“Rebel.” He laughed. “I’m going to pretend you were a virgin until we met.”

Now she laughed.

“I didn’t see a coffee maker, why don’t I go grab us some from the café downstairs while you get ready?”

Her eyes met his, and for a moment, he thought she would say she wasn’t going. But instead, she kissed him then pulled back the sheets to stand in her naked glory before she walked toward the bathroom.

“Okay, but I could really use some help here first,” she called out from the door, and he heard the shower turn on.

His shirt was off, and he shucked his jeans off in record time. When he stepped into the bathroom, she was bent over the sink with her hips pushed out and a wicked smile.

“We may as well get a little more dirty before we get cleaned up,” he said.

Chapter Sixteen

Hailey

Being with Finnwas feeling more and more consuming. After a night and morning enjoying his attentive and healthy sex drive, she had trouble keeping her hands off him. He hadn’t shaved, and a day’s worth of scruff covered his square jaw outlining his lush lips. She swore his green eyes grew power from their kisses and nearly glowed right before he pushed her into orgasmic bliss. Not to mention his muscular form could make a paper bag look sexy. Right now, his carved thighs covered in jeans were spread to entice her as he sat in the driver’s seat, and his forearms were taunting her to resist touching him. Maybe they could keep doing whatever this was if she got partner and he left the firm for JAG. It was two big ifs, but maybe it was a viable option.

“What is it?” he asked.

“You’re sexy,” she said.

His hand left the steering wheel and gripped her leg.

“Right back at you, but what were you really thinking?”

“I’m just taking it all in,” she said, diverting her eyes to look out the window at the forest of trees along the highway. A sign readVirginia Beach, 200 miles.

“Are we going to a beach in Virginia?”

“Maybe, if you promise not to jump out of the car.”

Her chest pounded, and all the feelings she pushed away the last time she was in Virginia Beach tumbled back to wash over her. She took a deep breath.

“Bad memories?”

“No, actually, just sad. That’s where my gran lived.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I should have told you where I needed to go. I was worried you wouldn’t want to sit in the car on such a long drive.”

His hand enveloped hers, and she squeezed his back.

“No, it’s fine. Actually, it would be nice to put some flowers on her grave. Who knows the next time I’ll get back.”

“Okay. I was planning to stop by the local city records office first. Then we can go wherever you want.”

“Come to think of it, did you ever live in Virginia Beach?” she asked.

“I did when I first made the team, in between missions. But I was mostly on base, training or recovering.”

“Huh, I wonder if we ever crossed paths and never knew it.”

“I would remember you.”

Her cheeks ached from smiling, but a sinking feeling began to form in her gut—how was she going to let him go? The idea of him leaving the firm had taken root in her mind, offering up a scenario for them to keep seeing each other—assuming she did make partner. But for now, she wasn’t going to worry about it.
