“Okay. In that case, I will go somewhere with Nan tomorrow morning.Maybe have lunch with her, and you can come over in the afternoon.”

She smiled.“Sounds like a plan.”

I leaned forward, my lips caressing hers.“I don’t want to leave you.”

Nova chuckled.“Me neither, but I think your nan will send out a search party if you don’t go home soon.”

“I doubt it, but I guess I should go in.”

Nova nodded.“Yeah.I suppose so.”

She kissed me once more, and then we reluctantly pulled apart and got out of the car.Nova paused to grab the things she’d bought from the backseat, and then I locked the car and she joined me on the path.

I stood looking at her for a moment, seeing the little wisps of hair that had fallen out of her ponytail as the day had gone on.She looked a little tired, which wasn’t surprising since we’d been walking around for most of the day, but her eyes were still so bright, and she was still so freaking beautiful.

I reached out, resting my hand on her cheek.“Have a good evening, dolcezza.”

The word came out of my mouth so naturally it surprised me, and still in a perfect Italian accent, as if I’d never stopped speaking the language.

When I first left Italy, I’d been speaking Italian fluently for close to six years.I’d had to pick it up quickly, and I did.But when I went to Australia, I had to switch back to using English, and there were times when Italian words came out randomly. It had been a long while since that had happened, though. And I’d never used that particular word with a woman before.

Nova’s eyes sparkled, a flash of heat to them.“What does that mean?”

I smiled.“It means ‘sweetness’.I’m not sure where that came from, although it’s definitely fitting.”

Her grin widened.“Please speak to me in Italian more often.”

Laughing, I pressed my lips to hers.“Ci vediamo domani, bella signora,” I whispered, and she let out a soft sigh.

“Honestly, I don’t care if you just told me to wash your dirty socks.”She wound her free arm around my neck, her eyes smouldering.“Everything sounds sexy in Italian.”

She brushed a kiss on my lips, making it even harder to want to walk away from her.

“If it gets this reaction, I’ll only speak in Italian.”I felt her smile against my lips.

“That’s okay with me.”

Chapter15

Nova

Mumand I wandered into Presents of Dawlish, a gift shop that had been in town for as long as I could remember, and always a great place to browse. They had the most amazing selection of gifts, cards, and chocolates anyone could ever need.We were looking for a small additional gift for June.I had a photo on my phone of June and Trevor that I’d taken of them one afternoon when we were sitting in their garden back in early spring, and Mum had got the picture engraved onto a heart-shaped pendant that hung on a silver chain. We both knew the necklace would be more than enough for her, but we wanted to get her something extra too.

“I need to get something for Donovan,” Mum said as we headed past the first section of the shop towards the back, where the cards were.“Have you got any ideas what he might like?”

The mention of his name sent the butterflies flapping around my stomach again, and my cheeks were heating.Thankfully, she was too busy browsing to notice.I hadn’t told her about my last few days with him yet because I hadn’t been sure how to bring it up.

“I don’t know,” I said.“Maybe beer.He likes a Peroni.”

“Seems a bit impersonal. Can you think of anything else?”

“Honestly, he doesn’t want anything.Because he’s always travelling, he doesn’t really have a need for stuff.Beer and chocolate might be the best things.”

We moved around to the side of the shop that homed chocolate gifts, and after searching for a bit, we decided to make the gift fun and got Donovan a chocolate reindeer.

“How has June been the last few days?”Mum asked as we continued to look around the shop, away from the chocolates and around to the glass cabinets containing a huge array of ornaments.

“Actually, she had a bit of a breakdown the day you asked if she and Donovan wanted to come for Christmas. Before you asked, obviously. The offer cheered her up, though.”
