“That’s true. They never noticed all the chemicals I stole from the lab.”

“For poison-making purposes?” He quirks a brow.

“Yeah. My father didn’t have all the stuff I needed in his home office. Hold the bike. I’ll go through first, then you can push it through the hole.”

“All right.” Once we’re both through, he asks, “Where to now? We can’t simply bust in the front door.”

“You can’t guess?”

He looks at me, and I notice his nose and cheeks are red from the cold. That suit jacket is not doing much to keep him warm, but he hasn’t complained at all. He never complains about anything, and that’s another detail about his personality that gives me all the tingles and flutters.

His lips split into a grin. “The lab. You’ve done this before.”

I return his smile. “I knew I liked you for a reason.”

He arches a brow. “Areason? Just one?”

Heat spreads through my cheeks. I don’t know why I get flustered every time this man flirts with me. I’d rather deal with Eric when he’s a pain. I can handle verbal sparring with him, but when he’s sweet, that’s my undoing.

“Fine. Ignore me, kitty cat. I’ll get the truth from you one way or another.”

Ripples of desire run down my spine, making me shiver. I want him to use whatever weapon he has in his arsenal to get a confession from me. That’s a dangerous wish to have when the man of my dreams is a killer with slashing tendencies. But I’m weak for Eric and his touches.

“I’m cycling to the lab’s window,” I say. “It’ll be faster.”

He covers my hands on the bike’s handle with his. “No, I am. I’m done sitting in the back.”

He’s awfully close again, and I have to crane my neck to keep staring into his eyes. “What about your leg?”

“I’ll deal with it.” His gaze drops to my lips, and automatically, I part them. “If you don’t want me to kiss you, kitty cat, I suggest you step back.”

I want to screamKiss me, Eric! But I don’t. We’re out in the open, and the people chasing us could see us from the street. I pull my hands from under his and increase the distance between us. Eric keeps staring at me with a shit-eating grin.

“You want to ride the bike, then go,” I say.

“So bossy.” He mounts the bike and takes off, going faster than he should before I have the chance to jump on the back seat sideways.

I manage it but keep my mouth shut. He did it on purpose, obviously expecting a reaction from me. Me not giving him one is probably driving him crazy, and I love it when he gets mad.

“There’s the lab’s window,” I let him know when we’re near it.

“How many times have you broken in over the years?” He stops the bike, and I jump off.

“Too many to keep track. I started coming here after hours freshman year.” I try the window, hoping the latch I broke all those years ago remains unfixed.

“How many people have you poisoned since then?”

“A few obnoxious assholes that got in my way.” The window begins to slide up, but it’s catching on something and not moving up as easily as it should.

“And no one ever suspected foul play?”

I glance at Eric and find him studying me. My brows furrow. “I neverkilledanyone. Hansen Warner was supposed to be my first target.”

His eyes grow larger. “Oh.” He rubs the back of his neck, looking sheepish. “Shit, I’m sorry I ruined it for you.”

My heart flutters. I don’t know what side of Eric I love more, the unhinged or the sweet one. I’m about to attack his mouth when he points at the window. “Do you need help with that?”

I step aside, making room for him. Without showing any sign of a struggle, he pushes the panel to the top with ease.Show-off.Then he moves aside and, grinning, says, “Ladies first.”
