His voice is so distorted I can barely make out the words.

“Sch, relax,” I whisper in his ear to soothe him, swimming toward the shore as I’m vaguely aware of that his behind is bumping against my crotch. “Don’t worry, I got you, I promise.”

“Got me?” he growls. “I’m perfectly capable of handling myself. Now let go of me!”

I shake my head. “You’re confused, wet and scared but it’s okay, everything’s going to be all right. You’re safe in my arms. Just let me help you.”

“Help me? Safe in your arms? For fucks sake, woman let go of me,” he gags because I do have a pretty tight grip but I refuse to let go.

He might sound sure of himself but he doesn’t fool me. I saw the way he acted in those waves. Like a starfish out of water.

“I’m afraid if I let you go, you’ll drown.” My lips pinch in determination. “And that is not happening on my watch.”

“You will regret this,” Blaise warns but I don’t take him seriously.

“People say a lot of things when they’re afraid. Once your head has cleared you might even thank me.”

“Don’t count on it,” he fires back and I exhale in relief when my back hits sand.

Getting up, I put my hands under Blaise’s arms and pull him up to the shore. Or I’m trying to at least, because not only is he massively heavy but he’s doing his best to fight me.

Why? I’m just trying to help...

Snarling, Blaise reaches for my waist and flips me over in the air until it feels like I’m flying and then I’m on my back in the sand just like he is.

We both sit up and I stare at him in shock as he curses to himself and rubs saltwater out of his eyes. It’s the most disheveled I’ve ever seen him. His nice clothes are a mess, his wet shirt plastered against his body and he has a ferocious look on his face that I’ve never seen before.

He’s scruffy and its h...hot.

I swallow. “Sorry about making you slip, but it happened so fast, I barely had time to react...”

“You said my time with you would be worthwhile,” he interrupts pointing at me in accusation. “But it has been nothing but a disaster!”

I recoil, looking at him with wide eyes. “Don’t be like that. It was an honest accident...”

“Don’t give a rats tail,” he says, with eyes going off like thunder bolts, then spits, “and Miss Crichlow? You can forget all about the funding. Because there’s no chance in hell, I’ll give you a penny of my money now.”

My heart sinks. How can he be so heartless? I’ve tried so hard, done everything I could think of, I put myself out there, embarrassed myself, swallowed my pride...

I was so close to get him to become a patron up at the fort and now he just took it away. Just like that. Because he can.

Fury bubbles up inside of me and I shriek, “Ugh...you have no idea how much I regret saving you. I should have just let you drown!”

“Drown?” he barks. “You saving me? You’re even more delusional than I thought.”

I grab a handful of sand in anger and throw it in the air. The breeze causes it to sway back and some of it hits Blaise in the face, making his fury to rise even more until he’s about to explode.

“Watch it!” he snarls and I jerk my chin.

“You watch it!” I snarl back and I know he’s about to blow. “And yeah, obviously I’m delusional,” I yelp, “since I put my faith in you, but I didn’t think you’d be this thick!”

“Thick? The only thick thing of mine that you want is my wallet but as of now consider the bank forever closed,” he roars at me.

I’m speechless and at the realization that I messed up once more and in front of Blaise on top of it all, I lose it.

“What is wrong with youuu?” I scream at the top of my lungs.

“What is wrong with youuu?” he roars back.
