“Fancy,” she mocks before brushing my arm with her elbow. “Starting the bar off pretty high already, how in the world am I going to keep up?”

“Just wait until you see what else I have,” I try to joke as we start making our way back.

An hour is enough time to prepare myself, isn’t it? By the time we get back to my cabin, I’m sure I’ll befine.

“Can I use your shower? I don’t think cuddling while smelling like chemicals and sweat is that tempting.”

Sawyer looks at me like I’ve told him the world is ending. It’s not that much of a problem, is it? I’m just joking about the cuddling part. I’d never have the actual guts to initiate that.

“Yeah, sure,” he agrees as he rubs his cheek. Looking around, it’s like he’s lost in his own home. “Need to take one of those myself. Did you bring anything to change into?”

My blank stare makes him frown. Fighting back a wince, I once more wish I could’ve come prepared.

“I can always put this stuff back on,” I explain quickly, ignoring the fact that it would completely defeat the purpose of taking a shower in the first place.

“—lend you something,” he mumbles as he already gives me his back. Walking away, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to follow or not. Awkwardly trailing after him, I’m soon standing in the middle of his room.

What a day. Look at me go. He’s got a nice-looking bed, full-sized too. Shame he doesn’t have a television in here. I’d opt for snuggling over the blanket. Not too much of a mess either inside other than the familiar couple of red shirts balled up on the outside of his laundry basket.

Sawyer isn’t much of an actor or a basketball player. I like him more as a mountain rescuer anyway.

“This should work,” he tells me after turning away from his closet. He’s got a dark blue shirt in his grip and let’s be honest, that thing is going to swallow me whole. Of course, I take it without a single complaint.

“This will be perfect, thank you.” Giving him a reassuring smile, I’m met with more of a grimacing look. Ouch. Maybe I should tell him I’m actually homesick and ask him to drive me home. As kind as he acts toward me, I know he would without even asking why.

A part of me wishes he would be the type to ask. If that were to happen, I’d spill the truth. Tell him that my poor heart can only take so much of this tug and pull.

Instead of noticing the twist in my expression, he’s too busy showing me where his bathroom is. I’m no better, simply thanking him before closing myself off in the small room.

Hot water works wonders on my aching muscles. Thank goodness I’m off tomorrow as well. I’d be no use to the workers, too sore to even lift a bottle of syrup. As dirty water runs down the drain, so do my worries. Well, some of them. Using his body wash helps ease the ache I have collecting inside.

By the time I leave the bathroom with my clothes bundled up in my arms, I find Sawyer hanging out in the kitchen. He’s got some snacks already pulled out. Ditching my clothes with my backpack, I go over to take a closer look.

Popping a cheese puff in my mouth, I hardly get another in before Sawyer’s pushing pills and a glass of water in my direction.

“Painkillers,” he explains when seeing me eyeing them, “I could practically hear you groaning from here.”

Well, that’s embarrassing. Not any more than noticing him looking at me. Well, more like staring. He’s not even looking at my face now. He’s looking at the shirt I’m wearing.

“Tell me you don’t regret letting me borrow it,” I groan, ready to just give up at this point and give the guy a good shake.

“Take the medicine,” he orders before walking in the direction I came from. “I won’t take long.”

That’s that then. Even when he wants to be caring, he still can act like a jerk. Huffing, I take the pills, gulp down the whole glass, and steal the box of his toffee-covered popcorn. I’ll eat the whole box before he gets out. See how he feels about that.

I’m two fistfuls in when I ditch the box to look at his movie collection. He’s got quite a few outside of a handful of different series as well. Must not have cable out here. To have a whole shelf loaded, I can’t imagine him ever watching something twice.

Going through each one, I find a horror movie that captures my attention. It might not be mushy, but I know many movies have romance subplots and this one has it written all over it.

“You found something?”

I jump and gasp. “Five-minute shower?”

“Seven, actually,” he corrects before picking up the case I dropped. “This’ll work. Go get comfortable and I’ll get everything set up.”

I do as he orders without too much of a fight, but I do grumble a bit. Eating more of his popcorn, he has the audacity to snort. Do I look like a comedian? He should be upset, it’s the popcorn he wanted to eat!
