Tenah’s gaze snapped to him. “What the hell kind of dice game were you playing?”

“One with some shady, shady mothers in the Abyss. I’m telling you, the lowest of the low—”

“Get on with it,” Vesara cut in.

Gireth’s face scrunched up in concentration. “Raging Waters—”

“Raye Witner,” Vesara corrected, freshly irked. “A highly esteemed courier for the mainland.”

“Right, Rain Whisperer told us there are shadows in the mountains of Aranma that belong to something called the Equil? Anyway, she was going to deliver a message to them about you, though she warned they are pretty selective about taking on newcomers.”

Tenah’s lungs expanded. If that was true, she wasn’t alone in her efforts. There were others that could aid her. Guide her.

“And to answer your question from last night, Ren,” Aeyis said, raising a bony arm in the air. “The shard can be removed with either Rama or a greater amount of Chaos. Which is what I’m assuming Tenah’s father will do and why he gave fair warning.”

Tenah looked between brothers, her hands clenching into fists in frustration at herself. While she’d been tucked in Renton’s bed, the others had been working to gather information to aid her.

She settled her racing heart, refocusing on her task. “Youwillkeep your promise if I come out different?”

Renton’s eyes churned with pent-up anger. “You won’t.”

Before she could talk herself out of the task at hand, she slashed a hole in the world, just large enough to squeeze in her body. Teeth clenched and muscles braced for danger, she strode into the chilling Void.

Elementals, she hated this place. It was too cold and quiet. Every footstep seemed to echo her presence in enemy territory.

She should have known something was wrong the moment she walked into the temple and only silence greeted her. Hairs stood on edge along her arms. Her confidence withered. What if this was a trap?

Fear swelled in her throat, shortening her breaths.

Shutting down thoughts that this would be her tomb when the utter darkness reminded her too much of death, she forced herself down the temple stairs. At the bottom, she spun and kicked out a boot to ensure her escape.

Tenah found nothing but empty air.

Panic curdling in her stomach, she dropped to her knees, hands frantically reaching out.

The stairs were gone.

Chaos wasdefinitelyfucking with her.

She sealed her eyes shut. “Is that all you’ve got?” she called out to Chaos, no matter how much she wished it wouldn’t respond.

Chaos rumbled with laughter. We smell him. We know what he hides in his heart. Your precious hunter.

The orb light flickered into existence, and with it came the death king.

Chapter35

Renton

“She’s been in there too long,” Renton muttered.

As time slipped by with Tenah wandering the Void alone, the entire crew lost their endorphin rush. Other than the incremental tightening of his muscles, Renton hadn’t moved. Glaring at the scar of silvery white light gave him some reprieve from his unease as if the act would keep the rift from misbehaving.

How long would this take? How far into the Void did she have to journey? How would they know if she was in trouble? Would Cirel be waiting for her?

His jaw clenched hard enough to ache as he dropped his folded arms. “Screw this. I’m going in.”

“Go get our girl.” Gireth tossed Renton his glaive.
