There was a unanimous nod. This was going far better than I had anticipated. Billie, who was seated next to me, started.

“I’m Billie, and I have a hole in my heart. It’s minor and doesn’t really require any sort of medication, but I guess it was enough for them to deem me unsuitable,” she said enthusiastically.

Aside from being alarmed at how readily Billie was accepting her life on an alien planet, I realized I wanted to know more about each woman as we went around. “Can you also add what you did on Earth before you ended up here?”

Billie was quick to respond, “I was the head bartender at a barbeque restaurant. I’m not sure how that will translate into work here, but Tora has assured me that orkin like to drink,” she said with a grin.

I could already tell that Billie and I were going to be fast friends. We shifted to the next woman. She was petite and pale but covered in freckles and had a mane of flaming red hair.

“Hi, I’m Ruby,” she said with a thick southern accent, “I’m from Georgia and was in my final year of nursing school. We were able to figure out I was left behind because when I was ten I was kicked in the head by one of my father’s horses, so part of my skull is a metal plate.”

A nursing student will be an enormous benefit to our community, I thought.

“Hi, Ruby, I am glad you are here with us. I think the healer would be very excited to use your experience and skill,” I said, smiling.

Ruby smiled back but said nothing, looking down at her hands. We moved onto the next woman.

“I’m Zoey and I’ll be honest, it took me a hot minute to figure out why I would be considered undesirable by the other aliens. It was only through Tora’s help that we were able to figure it out. I have three metal pins in my ankle. My ex pushed me down the stairs and shattered the bone.”

“Zoey, I am so sorry you had to go through that,” I say, reaching across the circle, I grabbed her hand.

“I’m getting better every day, but I am definitely not ready to meet any male orkin,” she said with a sad smile.

“And that is totally okay,” I said, giving her hand a squeeze.

We moved to the next woman.

“Hi, I’m Evelyn,” she said in a quiet voice.

“Any thoughts on why you are here, Evelyn?” I asked gently.

“I am on medication for anxiety and depression. I lost both my mother and father prior to being abducted, so I was going through a difficult time,” she said.

“I understand, Evelyn. I have severe anxiety and a panic disorder. They have already provided me with herbs that are helping. I am sure we will be able to help you,” I said sincerely.

Evelyn nodded, looking hopeful. We shifted to the next woman. She was curvy with a gorgeous smile and pink rosy cheeks.

“Hey all, I’m Virginia, but everyone calls me Ginny. The only reason I can think I have been left is my size. The label the aliens left with me said I was ‘not proportional.’ I will never fit into a size two or a size twelve for that matter. But if that means I ended up with hot orcs instead of creepy aliens, I am totally down,” she said breezily.

I laughed out loud. Ginny was definitely going to be another friend.

“What did you do before you were abducted?” I asked.

“I was in my first year as a licensed therapist and it sounds like we’re all going to need some extensive therapy,” she said with a grin.

All of the other women laughed, I could tell Ginny was going to be a popular character amongst our abductees. I moved to the next woman. She was tall and blonde, with her arms wrapped around her chest.

“Hi, I’m Lucy. I just finished chemotherapy and radiation. I’ve had a hysterectomy and I am a cancer survivor,” she said simply.

Ooof, that was going to be a lot.

“Are you cancer-free, Lucy?” I asked.

“Yes, as of my last scan, I’m in remission,” she said, slightly unfurling from her position.

“Well, I am sure the tribe will do whatever it can to ensure your needs are taken care of,” I said sincerely, before shifting to the next woman.

“Hi, I am Joanna, but everyone calls me Joey,” she said with a lopsided smile.
