“I get it. You still love Rocky.”

“Yes!”

“And where is he, darlin’? We know he’s alive, but he’s chosen not to return.”

“Maybe I should try calling him? If he knows about Rockson, he’ll come back. I know he will.”

Vegas sighed and patted my leg. “I’ve asked him whenever he calls if he wants to speak to you, and he says no.”

“How can he go from loving me to hating me?” The words stabbed me in the heart. I honestly thought we had been the perfect couple. Unshakable and unbreakable.

“I don’t think he hates you, darlin’.”

“You don’t?” A smidge of hope bloomed in my chest. I looked at Rockson, sleeping soundly. He needed his father like I did.

“No. We all saw how enamored he was with you. Every free second he had was spent with you.”

I smiled weakly. “Then why did he abandon me? And I know he’s cheated on me with that chick.”

“Cheated? Probably. Abandon you? I wouldn’t call it that. He’s got shit going on. Important shit. You just have to wait it out if you love him.”

“I do love him.”

“You love him so much, you didn’t tell him you were pregnant.” He hiked a judgmental brow.

“I did! But he must not have heard me or didn’t care. A woman was with him, and he didn’t deny fucking her. All he said was to trust him and just wait.”

“You could’ve made him listen.”

“I know. But I was angry, and I thought he’d call and want to speak to me again, but he hasn’t.”

“I’ve tried to get him to talk to you. I really have.”

“You should tell him about Rockson when you talk to him next.” I hated for Rocky to hear about our son from Vegas. It should be me sharing the news, but how could I if he wouldn’t talk to me?

“I don’t want to get in the middle of your shit.” He shifted in his chair. “Listen, I’ll ease you into the position. You can cook and clean until you stop breastfeeding. I doubt the guys would want your tits leaking during sex.” He chuckled. “Then again, some are freaks and might think your plump tits are the fountain of youth.”

I gasped, wholly mortified at the idea. “No!”

“Relax, darlin’. You can wait for sex until you wean Rockson, and we know where you stand with RJ.” He reclined in his chair. “Wouldn’t want RJ shooting the joint up because you still belonged to him.”

“That makes sense.” Relief washed over me. I’d breastfeed my baby for at least a year. Surely Rocky would be home by then.

“Another thing. The name Rockson doesn’t sit well with me.”

“Why not?”

“I just don’t like it. Let’s call him Nevada.”

“I named him Rockson,” I hissed. “It’s on his birth certificate.”

“So?” He shrugged. “I’m not forcing you to change it officially.”

Why did I feel like I was being stripped of my rights? Because I was. I had no one to rely on. My parents were gone. Brenda had moved to Florida after she’d graduated the year before me. I couldn’t even get a job in this damn town. No one would hire me. The only person offering to help me was Vegas.

The door opened and the nurse entered. “I have your release papers.” She looked at Vegas. “Did you bring the baby’s car seat, Daddy?”

“He’s not the father,” I replied quickly. “And I don’t have a—”
