Rocky’s gaze went from me to Tomcat. “It’s a long story.”

“Five years and four months long. None of us have time to hear it or want to.” I went around him to get my purse behind the bar. I couldn’t forget about my son. Leave it to Rocky to turn up at the worst possible time.

“So what’s going on here?” His voice boomed. “Are you a club girl and not Vegas’s girlfriend?”

I whirled around. “Why would you think I was with Vegas?”

“My friends told me your old man was the VP.” He moved to the side. By the entrance door were the men who’d fixed my tire. “Or does Vegas share you with his brothers?”

Oh shit, does he know about my son? Of course he does. His friends saw Rockson.

Vegas stood from his spot at the end of the bar and laughed. “She’s not my old lady. But yes, she’s a club girl.”

“A club girl.” Rocky’s lip curled in disgust. “Well, isn’t that nice? Get me a beer, sweet butt.”

“It’s not my shift. Mona or Tami can serve you.” I squared my shoulders and stared back at him.

“Get. Me. A. Fucking beer!” He sneered, then smiled. “Please.”

I didn’t flinch.

“Here, handsome. I’ve got you.” Tami put a draft in front of him. “Can I get you anything else?”

Rocky seethed and swiped the beer mug onto the floor. It smashed at my feet and drenched my heels. “Clean it up and serve me.”

“It’s not my shift,” I told him again. “For the record, you don’t own me. You have no right to demand anything from me. So pour your own fucking beer.”

His hand went around my throat and pushed me against the wall. “I have all kinds of demands for you, sweet butt.”

“Let her go.” Tomcat pulled out his gun. Not good. Rocky’s friends had theirs aimed at Tomcat a second later, then all the guys in the building took out their weapons. Any second, there’d be a blood bath.

“Fuck you!” Rocky spat at Tomcat. He looked at me, wholly confused. “You make me sick.”

“Good. Now let me go, you son of a bitch!” I slapped his hand away.

“We need to talk.”

“I don’t have time for you.”

“Make time, or you’ll be sorry,” he hissed in a warning tone.

“You don’t scare me. There is nothing you can do to hurt me anymore,” I said. He’d already shattered me years ago.

“Fine. Go. But we will talk.”

I rolled my eyes and stormed out of the building. He didn’t chase after me or yell. It wasn’t like him to give up so easily. Letting me go opened old wounds. I ran to my car, started it, and peeled out of the parking lot. A block down the road, I let my tears fall.

Rocky had returned and sent my whole world spiraling out of control. Would he go on a shooting spree and kill every guy in the building? Oh God,Tomcat.

I didn’t understand why Rocky came back after he’d abandoned me or why he’d care who I was fucking. But one thing was for sure. I hated him more than ever for returning and making the old feelings I’d tried to bury in my soul rise to the surface.

While the club was preoccupied with Rocky Jones’s unexpected return, I should pack my bags and take my son to Minnesota.

I pulled into the preschool’s parking lot and found a spot. I quickly checked my bank balance and wallet. I had forty-three dollars to my name. Payday was tomorrow. I wouldn’t be able to get far. Maybe Lydia could wire a little money to me.

I got out of my car and rushed into the building. They would charge me five dollars for every five minutes I was late picking up my kid. This place was also a childcare facility, so on the days Rockson attended, he stayed later until I got off work. His teachers all stayed until closing.

“Mommy!” Rockson ran toward me.
