“Honey, I am so sorry. So, so, so, so sorry.”

I shook my head and grabbed her wrists, gently pulling them away from her face. “Mom,I’msorry. You shouldn’t have seen that.”

She couldn’t look me in the eye, and I hated that. She laughed nervously and spluttered over words.

“Mom, what you saw—”

“Is none of my business. I didn’t see anything.” Her cheeks went even redder. “Sweetie, you’re an adult. You can do what you want with who you want.”

“But it’s Atlas,” I murmured.

“And he’s an adult, too.” She pressed her lips together.

“Please don’t tell Joseph,” I whispered. “Atlas probably isn’t ready, and we’re not.... It’s just. Fuck. It’s only sex.”

She frowned. “You’re being careful?”

Now it was me who had flaming cheeks. I brushed a hand through my hair. “Yeah, we are. So....”

“I won’t tell him, honey. It’s none of my business. If Atlas wants his dad to know, that’s up to him.” She touched her hand to my cheek, and I leaned into it. “I love you, Wy. Very much.”

“I love you, too.”

“I did wonder who was giving you all those love bites, though,” she said, and this time her smile was a little wicked. “Curiosity killed the cat, I guess.”

“Mom!”

“You’re not going to tell him?” Atlas’s voice came from the doorway.

We turned to look at him.

His eyes flooded with concern.

I felt sorry for him.

Mom went straight over to him and laid her hands on his shoulders. “Coming out to your dad is your decision, not mine. Though....” She glanced at me. “I would ask that you are both careful. I know sex is fun—”

“Mom.” I groaned.

She ignored me. “But sex can also be dangerous if you don’t protect yourself. I’m not a virgin, Wystan, I’ve had sex. Lots of sex.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t want to know that.”

Atlas laughed and it was one of the most real expressions I’d seen from him.

“I just want youbothto be careful.” She hugged Atlas, and he seemed shocked but leaned against her. She kissed him on the cheek before coming over to do the same to me. “I’ve learned my lesson about knocking, though.” She chuckled. “I won’t enter either of your rooms without letting my presence be known.”

“We’d be grateful.” Atlas grinned at me. “ ’Cause we kind of enjoy what we’re doing.”

I raised my eyebrows. That was a first from him, but it was a win I would take.

Mom let out a long breath. “And here I thought you hated each other. If that’s hate, then I’m doing it wrong.”

I groaned again. “Mom.”

Atlas and Mom both laughed loudly.
