SAMUEL

On Friday, Samuel waits outside Eden’s office. Sitting on a cane chair, he takes in the ocean view. The ocean offers him a sense of peace. He closes his eyes and simply listens to the waves breaking, the gulls squawking, and distant laughter.

A door slams and he snaps out of it when the king of douchebags walks out of the office.

“Ethan.” Jaw clenched, Samuel gives a curt nod of his head. He despises Ethan for breaking Eden’s heart, yet he should be thankful as it led her directly to him.

Ethan gives Samuel a sideways glance, throws his key ring in the air, and catches it while whistling to himself as he walks over to his sports car.

His gaze lingers momentarily, weighing him up.

If he owns the latest dang BMW, why is he working for Eden’s small family business? And why is she driving around in an at least ten-year old beat-up Holden?

Ethan revs the motor, a sound demanding attention.

Samuel looks away and focuses on the ocean.

“Hey.” He turns in the direction of the voice to the woman who’s his world.

“Evening.” He stands and kisses Eden. The loud motor beside them has her pulling away for the attention-seeking douchebag.

“Hey, Edes. We’re heading to The Shores for Friday night drinks. After the week we’ve had, I thought you might want to come along?”

Samuel glares at the asshole. It doesn’t have any impact because Ethan only has eyes for Eden.

“Sorry. We have plans. Please say hello for me.” She waves and then turns to Samuel. “Where’s Rose?”

Glancing over Eden’s shoulder, Samuel waits until the black car disappears from his sight.

Ethan’s words sink in.

He takes her hand and links his fingers between her delicate ones. “You haven’t mentioned having a terrible week.”

“It hasn’t been all bad,” Eden says in her sweet voice. “Especially since I came up with the brilliant idea to get away for the weekend. Just the three of us, then Sunday night the girls have asked to catch up.”

“With you.”

“No. With us.” She smiles. “Where did you say Rose is?”

“With your mother, shopping.” For the past six months, his emotions have been in turmoil, and everything he learned in Ulara about shutting down emotions, being a better man, is lost in a matter of months. Even more so with men like Ethan who have no respect. A part of Samuel’s past from when he was at college finds its way back into his thoughts, wanting to teach the asshole a lesson. Then Eden kisses him, and the bitterness evaporates. She makes everything better, and he understands Ethan wanting her back in his life because Eden makes us all better men.

Only Ethan blew his chance. Big time.

He may understand the need to want Eden, yet there’s no changing Samuel’s opinion of the douchebag.

“Only the three of us?” He pulls her into a hug. “Where did you have in mind?”

She smiles as if he doesn’t understand her. Her eyes widen playfully. “It’s a surprise.”

“Now, I’m afraid.”

“You should be,” she says and laughs.

“Do I need to buy more clothes? I haven’t really been shopping—”

“No.” She reaches up on her tiptoes to whisper close to his ear, “When Rose is sleeping, we’ll be naked.”
