“No.” He chuckles under his breath. “I’ve been to enough of these shows to know it can quickly get boring. And we also appreciate the free beer. All the awards complimenting your renovations are over, so if you want to slip out the door, do so now while dessert is served.

“Edes, I don’t feel so good.” Amy grabs her stomach.

“Thank you, Anthony. We’ll be in contact, and I’ll speak to Dad about your ideas.” He shakes my hand, and then I place a hand under Amy’s arm to help her to her feet.

On her other side, Ethan helps her to balance. “Okay, okay.” She pulls away from us. “I can stand on my own.” She pokes Ethan in the chest. “And I don’t need help, especially from you.”

Amy attempts her first step and her ankle buckles. Her ability to walk in her heels when sober is remarkable. However, being intoxicated could lead to her falling down the staircase. We assist her beyond the oversized wooden doors opening to a vast foyer.

“Stop.” She stares at us incredulously. “Where are you taking me?” She stumbles to a long table where pre-dinner drinks were served, and thankfully, most of the crystal has been cleared away. “Oh no,” she moans and leans over the table and heaves. A small amount of puke ends up on the table.

“A fast-track way to get us kicked out,” Ethan says and chuckles lightly. It surprises me as I assumed he’d be repulsed.

“I’ll grab a towel or something.” I spin, and before I move, Ethan stops me. He rips off his designer suit jacket and mops it up.

I’m equally grossed out and impressed by his action.

“I’m sorry.” Amy rests her head on her hands.

I place a hand on her forehead for support. “I love you, Ames, but dear god, please don’t do this here.”

“Why do I do this?” She moans. “Because I get overexcited thinking about the good times, and champagne is the common denominator.”

Ethan glances over his shoulder. “Is she talking math?”

“And answering her own question.” I rub her back.

With her head down, Amy’s hand reaches out and touches mine. Her fingers rub over my engagement ring. “Did I ruin your diamonds?”

“No, Ames.”

She lifts her head. “Did you see Eden’s diamond ring, Ethan?” she says sarcastically.

“Yes, Amy.” He glances at me and grins.

I shake my head. There’s no knowing what she’ll say next. “We need to keep her moving.” I spin around and pray we can get her down the stairs.

“Is everything okay here?” The waitress’ gaze flicks from Amy to Ethan, who is holding a soiled jacket, and she steps back. When he speaks, she meets his gaze and smiles. “Ethan, I’m Sienna’s younger sister, Chloe.”

Sienna.

Sienna, who I found pressed up against my bedroom wall with a butt-naked Ethan. Chloe’s red hair should have given it away. Ethan didn’t even blink an eye.

“Hey, Chloe. Good to see you. I need some help here. My friend is unwell. I hope it’s not food poisoning. Could you dispose of this jacket for me?”

Chloe takes the soiled jacket without flinching. “It’s good to see you,” she calls after us before her eyes slowly lower to her hands.

Turning, I steal one last glance because she obviously didn’t recognize me or maybe, like her sister, I’m invisible and insignificant when they see something they like. “Thanks, Chloe,” I call back. “I’m Eden. Make sure you say hi to Sienna for me.” Recognition dawns and her smile falls away.

“Was that necessary?” Ethan shoots me a sideways look, although he’s more focused on holding Amy on both legs while her other hand swings loosely over his shoulder.

“Did someone say Sienna?” Amy mumbles.

“Come on the other side, Eden.” Ethan gets a better hold on Amy while I press the button on the elevator and place Amy’s other arm around my neck.

The doors slide open, and we stumble in.

“I’m the worst friend,” Amy murmurs. Her head droops forward though her eyes remain closed. “After countless drunk times, you think I’d be a little more mature.”
