At midday, Samuel seeks food.

He has little energy to continue working.

The last time he worked the wards he was in his twenties, and he’s considerably thinner now. Before he makes it to the staff room, a queasy sensation overcomes him, and the hallway appears to move under his feet. He sways and then grabs the handrail for support, taking a moment to catch his breath.

A sharp pain stabs at his gut and his hand automatically presses for support.

“Dr. McMahon, are you okay?” He doesn’t know who the nurse is but is grateful for her concern. He’s about to brush her off and tell her he’s fine, then he stumbles. Pulling the pager from his pocket, he hands it to her.

“Can you please call Dr. Tolley?” Samuel knows the warning signs for syncope.

“Sure, but let’s get you to a bed first before you pass out.”

Black dots join before his eyes.

She leads him to the side room of the medical staff quarters to rest if needed then assists him onto the bed, lifting his feet onto the covers.

“Do you want me to remove your shoes?”

Samuel holds an arm across his brow to block out the fluorescent light. “I’m fine. Thank you again,” he says without opening his eyes. “I’ll wait here for Dr. Tolley.”

The door clicks closed.

Dang it. He should have asked her for food.

A short time passes before the door creaks as it opens.

“What happened?”

He opens his eyes at the sound of Dr. Tolley’s voice.

“It’s nothing. I just need food.” He looks her in the eye, his expression solemn. “Can this please stay between us?”

EDEN

My hair is styled and makeup applied, ready for Dana’s farewell.

A cab is booked for six o’clock to the city.

I’ve been anxious about today, and it’s come too soon. Samuel promised he’d be home in time to go with me even though he hasn’t arrived home before seven all week.

It’s a family affair, and Faith’s kids are sleeping the night at Jake’s parents.

I booked Tiffany, Amy’s cousin, to babysit, and I expect her to arrive within the hour. I’m also hoping to use Tiffany if I choose to follow the nursing pathway.

The decision needs to be mine without the influence or input of my family. I know Samuel will say to do it if it’s what I want, though how can I when he’s struggling mentally and physically?

I need to be here for him.

Iwantto be here for him.

Mum has told me I’d make a wonderful nurse like Gran.

My passion isn’t as strong as hers. My dreams have already come true. Samuel is here with Rose and me.

Anything else is a bonus.
