Jimmy peered up at her. “I’m pretty sure he wants you to forgive me.”

“I think I’m going to agree with Jimmy,” Owen said. “Maybe you should forgive him.”

Roni scowled at Owen, harrumphed, then looked down at her cat.

Jimmy gazed warmly up at her. “Apparently, he likes me. I can’t be all bad. Maybe you should give me a second chance?”

She bit her lip, obviously wavering.

“Come on,” he pushed. “Let’s go out to dinner with Owen and Brianna. It will be like old times.”

“I’m going to have to agree with Jimmy there,” Owen said. “Whatever happened between you two, let’s forget about it for tonight, go out, and have a good time.”

“Fine. You can buy me dinner, but this doesn’t mean I’ve forgiven you.” Roni leaned down and swooped Spooky up into her arms.

“That works,” Jimmy said, smiling. “I like a challenge. By the end of the night, you will not only accept my apology, but you will give me your forgiveness. I’m sure of it.”

“I will, huh?” she said, looking doubtful. “Don’t be so sure.”

He looked into Spooky’s brilliant peridot eyes and knew instantly he had to paint this cat.

He held up his camera. “Do you mind?”

“Not at all. But Spooky might.”

Jimmy took a couple pictures of Spooky from different angles and could swear the cat was posing for him. He even managed to get a few of Roni looking adoringly at her cat. Spooky even seemed to be enjoying the attention when Brianna walked in.

“Hey, you guys!” She saw Jimmy and squealed in delight. “Jimmy.”

He quickly stood, then gave Brianna a hug. “Hey there. It is so good to see you.”

“You too. Are you two joining us for dinner?” she asked, looking at Brianna with hope shining in her expression.

“We are.” Jimmy turned to Owen. “Where are we going to go?”

Owen grinned and stood. “Follow me. I know the perfect place.”

Jimmy looked at Roni. “You want to drive or should I?”

“You,” she said quickly. “Let me tell Jessica where we’re going. I’ll meet you out front.” With Spooky in her arms, she headed toward the counter.

“You owe me, buddy,” Owen said under his breath.

Jimmy smiled and patted him on the back. “That I do. First round is on me.”

CHAPTER7

Roni sat in the passenger seat of Jimmy’s dad’s truck as they followed Owen and Brianna. The same truck they’d always driven in together when they were in high school. If she closed her eyes, she could almost imagine she was back there now—happy and in love.

She took a deep breath, pushed the memories out of her mind, and tried to focus on the here and now. She couldn’t believe she was here, that she caved so easily. “Do you think he’s taking us to Angelo’s?” Roni asked, thinking of their old hangout. “I haven’t been back there in years.”

Jimmy grinned. “I hope so. I miss that place.”

Memories of all their late nights at Angelo’s with Brianna and Owen surged through her mind. Back then, they’d been so excited about the future, so happy to just spend time together doing absolutely nothing. Boy, if only they’d known how lucky they’d been back then. Life had been so much easier.

“Looks like Angelo’s is the place,” Jimmy said and pulled into the parking lot. “I can’t believe it’s still here.”

Roni was glad; she’d been wanting to try it again. “From what Owen says, it’s going as strong as ever. Only now, Angelo’s son runs the place and his new wife apparently makes the best marinara sauce in town. They’ve classed the place up so it’s more than just a pizza parlor. He and Brianna go all the time.”
