“Fuck,” she breathes.

“Yeah.”My thoughts exactly.

ChapterSix

Nova

When Cora wakes up snuggled tightly in my arms, face buried in my neck, she stiffens before scrambling out of bed without so much as a good morning. I allow her to give me the cold shoulder because she’s not a morning person, but as she locks me out of the bathroom so she can shower alone, I decide I’m pissed.

I step into some cotton shorts and a tank top before leaving the room. I quickly freshen up in one of the spare bathrooms and come back to my own, finding the shower off and the door cracked open. Taking it as an invitation, I shove my way inside.

Cora is brushing her now-wet hair, wrapped in one of my robes. She looks like she’s put her guarded face back on, and I sigh.

“Are you done being grumpy?”

“Don’t know what you’re talking about,” she mumbles absently, not meeting my eye.

“Cora—”

“So, how much are you renting this place for?” she interrupts, clearly not wanting me to pry into whatever thoughts she’s processing.

I snort at the ridiculous question. “I told you, I bought it.”

She freezes, the brush stalling in her hair. “But you're leaving, right? Are you leasing it out or something?”

Did she drink silly juice for breakfast while I wasn’t watching? What kind of question is that? I reach over, touching the back of my hand to her forehead. She smacks it away softly and steps back. “What are you doing?”

“Checking to see if you have a fever.”

“Why the fuck would I have a fever?”

I pop my hip against the marble counter. “Because you're apparently experiencing short-term memory loss.”

“Stop messing around,” she chastises, going back to brushing her damp hair. “When are you leaving? Later tonight? Tomorrow?”

Snatching the brush from her hands, I click my tongue angrily. “I don’t like being ignored, Cora.”

Her brows scrunch together. “I’m not ignoring you.”

“No, but apparently you were last night.” She opens her mouth, but I don’t offer her the opportunity to speak. “Last night, when I explicitly told you that if you were going to continue college here, you’d do itandcome home to me every night. Itoldyou that I bought this place. I’m not going anywhere.”

She sighs heavily. “Why are you doing this? Why do we keep playing this game?”

Game? She thinks we'rea game? Fuck, if we were banging right now, I would slap her. I have to remind myself that taking my frustration out of her body wouldnotbe the correct course of action in this circumstance. It would only confuse her further, so I guess it’s time that I enlighten her.

“You don’t get it, do you?”

Cora blinks up at me, emotions that I can’t place dancing behind her eyes. “Get what?” Her voice is a whisper. A helpless sound coming from pink parted lips.

“We’re more than a good fuck for each other.” My hand cups the side of her face, stroking her cheek softly. “Our chemistry in bed is mind-blowing, sure, but we’re not just getting off when we’re together. We’re more than that.”

“How can we be?” she croaks. “How can we be more than that, Nova?”

“Are you under the impression that there is anything in the world you want that you can’t have, sweet girl? Do you think there is a single thing I can’t get for you? That I can’t make happen?” My lips press against her forehead, and a shaky sigh leaves her. “You can have everything you want. You can haveme. All you have to do is ask.”

“Nova…”

“Say the words, baby. Just ask, and I’ll give you all of it.”
